Dun dun dun dun, dun dun dun!
May. 19th, 2008 02:07 pmSome things I never noticed about Indiana Jones until yesterday's marathon:
-From Raiders: Katanga, the ship captain who is hired to ferry Indy and Marion away from Cairo, is actually a good guy. He seems to give Marion up to the Nazis, which is what I remembered, but he did try before his ship was boarded to hide them both. I thought he and his crew were just waving to Indy because they got screwed when trying to deal with the Nazis and anything that fucked the Nazis was all good to them. But, no, he was on the level.
-From Temple of Doom: Whoa, the second one is a prequel! No, really! ToD takes place in 1935, Raiders is in 1936!
-From Last Crusade: Elsa might have intentionally selected the wrong grail to give to Donovan (the American Nazi). I never noticed how honestly distressed she was at the book burning in Berlin, and I pretty much ignored where she was at all sympathetic because, hello, sided with the Nazis! But as an adult I can appreciate how she was using them as a means to an end without liking them much. (Okay, doesn't excuse her, but it does differentiate that she is not actually a Nazi believer herself.) So when she, Indy, and Donovan get to the grail chamber, she seizes on Donovan's trust and hands him an obviously wrong grail. As he looks at it, she's seen in the background smiling evilly at him. I think she set him up by way of apology to Indy and his dad for all her betrayals. It did make her a more complex villain, and I enjoyed that.
