Post to cover the non-overlap between me and [livejournal.com profile] jethrien:

There is a donor drive for the National Marrow Donor Program this Sunday. It's a cheek swab and a promise that you don't mind being put on their registry. It's something I've honestly always meant to do and a recent reminder (plus [livejournal.com profile] jethrien finding the drive) means I'm going to get it done this weekend.

I'm thinking of heading over 11ish, grabbing lunch afterwards and before I go off on a jaunt with [livejournal.com profile] feiran. The more the merrier. The more = the more lives potentially saved, too. GUILT TRIP GUILT TRIP GUILT TRIP.

I kid. Info about donation is here, and rest assured that donation is entirely voluntary. Forever. As in, no stranger is ever going to beat you up and take your bone marrow and no doctor is going to coerce you. This is just something I've always known I should do, and I'm going to do it, so I feel pretty good. I hope it makes a difference for someone someday.

Hmm, I'll consider it. I can't ever donate marrow (the surgical procedure would probably give me another keloid) but I might be able to do PBSC. I'd like to point out something on that website, though.

"Your blood is then removed through a sterile [oh thank god, not one from the used needle exchange program] needle in one arm and passed through a machine that separates out the blood-forming cells. This process is similar to donating plasma. The remaining blood is returned to you."

"Returned to you?" What does that mean, like, in a thermos?

When you donate plasma, the blood goes out one arm, through a machine that takes out some plasma, and back in the other arm. So you get your blood back, safely in your body, minus the one thing they were trying to harvest.

It's the same process they use for platelet donation, only that also involves a centrifuge to get at the platelets.

You've inspired me. I saw tis too late to go with you, but I'll go to one of their other ones at some point.

Do! It's very important and they are always in need.
