I ::heart:: Jay Smooth. There's something to be said about boiling down complex issues to analogies reducing our ability to hold meaningful dialogues, but that's usually because the analogies in question are faulty. In this case, he's absolutely right.

Oh, I agree. I like the fact that he gets right to the point- that you cannot know someone's intention, and thus cannot prove it, etc. And I also like the fact that this is a piece that will make people think - about how they approach issues, and how they deal with it when people step over the line.

And, yeah, it is really maddening when people who get caught misbehaving try to make it the fault of the person who calls them on it. Uncool. I'm just saying that some of those people are so fervent about never admitting they are wrong, that any statement might spark a spurt of extra-obnoxious behavior. But, you know, one can hope that deep down they know they are a bigoted turd, and they will feel like a jerk later on and maybe watch what they say and rethink their statements in future.
