I talked to some people this weekend, but the general boredom of being stuck at home turns me into a mush, so I basically didn't get around to the computer again after my immediately post-surgical posting.
Well, what a time I had. I probably should have gone back to work Friday, seeing as major pain never really kicked in. My oral surgeon was pretty fantastic helpful-wise; he talked us into having all four teeth (us being my mother and I, not the royal 'we' here) removed, but only because he made a good case for it and he let us decide in the end. Basically, he said all would have to come out sometime, why not now and be done with it? Then he left the room and my mom and I came to the same conclusion. I was a bit nervous as I'd never had general before and had canted towards the local prior to the appointment for that reason (besides price and recovery issues). Came back, talked to me while I had the laughing gas over my nose, and he waited till I was out to force in some mouth guard because it was too painful.
Nice guy, hell of a surgeon. I woke up in the recovery room, apparently after some difficulty getting me to get up and out of the operating theater, and woke to the gauze and a pair of ice packs. Those were to come on and off every 15 minutes, the gauze out and refreshed every 30. They'd given me a local, seeing as the right cheek remained numb hours afterward (it is the weirdest feeling in the world to feel where the local stops midway across your face, especially on your lip and tongue). My mother took care of me soooo nicely (she's gotta get an extra nice set of presents for the trifecta of her birthday-Christmas-Mother's Day, I tell you), and she insisted I stay home Friday, too, and pampered me, which is fun. Don't get that often any more.
The oral surgeon said pain ought to have a 24-48 hour onset. Once that happened, medicate and keep medicated. No worries. Friday morning, nearly 24 hours later when I woke up, my gums were a bit sore, but mostly because I suspect I clench my teeth at night and doing so after teeth were removed=hurty...but not too hurty. To avoid any possible complications should pain get worse, I opted not to take any household painkillers and waited for the pain to begin in earnest. Had I known that was the worst of it, I might have taken the hardcore stuff just to try it as it now seems I won't get the chance. All weekend, I waited, and still, I was good to go. I still knock on wood when I say that, but seriously, even if it did start aching now, it would be a relief rather than, well, a pain.
So, my first and only wisdom tooth extraction, first and only visit to an oral surgeon, turned out fine. I wasn't too nervous other than in anticipation of being laid up and in pain, but neither of these things really happened. I was a bit light-headed Thursday and Friday, but otherwise, a-okay. This has led to some incredulity upon my reporting it, some jealousy. At the very least, I'm aware I got off really easy. Just lucky, I guess.

Date: 2004-10-18 09:18 pm (UTC)yay for painlessness ^_^
yeah they had to talk me into getting all four at once too... o_O
I think I was pretty lucky on the pain/complications front too - some people have horrible time of it, with infections etc....
