The Rules: Post info about ONE Supreme Court decision, modern or historic to your lj. (Any decision, as long as it's not Roe v. Wade.) For those who see this on your f-list, take the meme to your OWN lj to spread the fun.

Give it up to Marbury v Madison, everybody! Judicial review in the house!

And you might think it's odd of me, but I'm a fan of...no, not what you're thinking. I'm not a fan at all, really, but it was fun to quote Meet The Feebles. (Man I need to see that again.) What I'm really fan of is Lawrence v Texas! Consenting adults? Go on and get biz-zay.

Heh..haha...hahahahaha...how obscure should I get?

You in particular may appreciate a case that I got to cite seriously today, but isn't from SCOTUS: United States v. Syufy Enterprises, 903 F.2d 659, (9th Cir. 1990). Not for political reasons; it's a fairly uncontroversial antitrust case. But it should appeal to your film buff side--look very closely at Judge Kozinski's language throughout the opinion.

Gnung...how do you read this shit day after day? I'm two lines into it and I'm falling asleep. Then I get to the Grandpa shakes his cane at the kids part and I'm like, "They let this sort of blog-worthy stuff into official documents?"

Believe it or not, this is the interesting part. In case you've ever thought that you'd really love to look at the private e-mails of corporate big-shots...you're wrong. What's notable about that particular opinion is that Kozinski embedded about 200 film titles in the body of that opinion, which were conveniently highlighted in the link I gave.

Kozinski is known for writing weird and quirky opinions--such as Mattel, Inc. v. MCA Records, the case where the song "Barbie Girl" was hit with a trademark infringement claim.

No, I did see the film titles, but that is what made me roll my eyes hardest. I have a friend who would, with his best friend, try to hold a conversation entirely in movie titles. It was agonizing.

I have a couple notables from the 1800s Dred Scott v. Sandford (slavery - master takes slave into free state, slave runs away, is recaptured, slave sues, but is ruled not a citizen - BOO); Plessy v. Ferguson (segregation on trains - can't really remember the details, but established the whole "separate but equal" nonsense), and then of course Brown v. Board of Ed. (if you don't know, then I'm not tellin' :-P) and ok, this isn't a fav, but really, who hasn't heard of Bush v. Gore :-P I am nerd.

And just as a side note, Amanda Tapping is sporting a (bad) fake British accent along with that long black hair (read: wig) for that new show Sanctuary on SciFi. WTF?

Here's a better question: why do you still care what she does off of Stargate? I learned a long time ago that no matter how much you like certain actors/actresses, they will have made some piece of crap thing somewhere that you won't be able to tolerate. It's best not to investigate these things and just enjoy them for what you enjoy them for.

LOL I don't. I saw an ad for it while flipping through channels, and she was talking in that weird accent, and I was like, WTF? and had no one to tell in my apt all by myself :-P

Aww, well, now you should know to steer clear. I'm just trying to impart my limited wisdom to you. Just because I had to learn the hard way that my high school crush on Keanu Reeves didn't justify watching even two seconds of Little Buddha, doesn't mean you have to! Get out! Save yourself!

Some nice ones over here, but I wouldn't have known them if not for the site: http://www.supremedicta.com/2008/09/greatest-case-name-ever.html

United States v. Article Consisting of 50,000 Cardboard Boxes More or Less, Each Containing One Pair of Clacker Balls, 413 F. Supp. 1281 (D. Wisc. 1976).

In rem cases are hilarious. There's also a famous case where someone sued Satan--and the court dismissed for lack of jurisdiction.
