Paul Krugman has won the Nobel Prize for economics this year. I didn't realize that, on top of writing a column twice a week for the NYT, he is a professor at Princeton.

Gotta love this part:
“For readers of the column, maybe they will read a little more carefully when I’m being economistic, or maybe have a little more tolerance when I’m being boring.”

Yes, yes I probably will.

Fun personal fact: my parents bought our house from another Nobel laureate in economics. He got it, like, fifteen years after we got the house, but still. Brush with Nobel glory!

Hooray! Hopefully this will give certain media outlets more to talk about than "Oh no, the Swedish Academy thinks American literature is unworthy!"

...what? They're really complaining because they didn't get the Lit award? Bitches, please.

The non-story has been that the head of the search committee said that American literature is "too isolated and insular." The head of the American Academy of Literature took offense and sent him a reading list. Here and here.

Sigh. Academic fights are so boring.

Yeah, no. I've been following this too. The Swedes are just being obnoxious snobs. A disportionately high number of Lit Nobels go to Scandinavians. I'm sure that's all based on merit.

They're secretly terrified of a mob wielding giant swiss army knives! They can't help it!

Did you just confuse the Swedes with the Swiss? Shame!

I did. Sue me. I haven't had lunch, I've been working all day, and I'm cranky. I can be bothered to care than the Swiss aren't the Swedes some other time.

You didn't know that? I took Microeconomics from him. (He's a crap teacher, btw). He's the reason I got into book publishing. Surely you've heard the story.

I did not, and I have not, respectively. Do share some time?

I would bet that he's a crap teacher - never had a class with him, but he doesn't do so well with the public speaking (he is rather boring and pedantic in interviews :-P). It was funny to see him and Doran (conservative NES prof) go at it on an Iraq war panel hosted at WWS though (back in 2002 I think). :-P

Nice! I've been a fan of Krugman's since he started his Slate column about a decade ago. People often forget he started as a critic, from the right, of the Clinton administration. Then Bush came along and he got shrill...

Fun fact, which you've probably heard before, was that a Nobel econ laureate once told a joke to me while he was peeing in a urinal.

Krugman is a good writer. Occasionally dry, and not as entertaining as Friedman, but his theory is sound. And now I know why, mm?

Those wacky Econ laureates. What's up with them?

Krugman's columns are also often very formulaic, too -- notice the preponderance of one-sentence third paragraphs.

But he has a really interesting blog.

HAHAHA. Oh, you're cute :-P Didn't know? Really? I was all yay for Krugman this morning.
