How long will the honeymoon last? Well, if President Obama keeps at his current pace, I'm pretty sure I'll die of ecstasy before we get there. Gitmo must be closed, military "trials" suspended, global gag rule being repealed, increased openness, repealing the ban on stem cell research...

Holy hell, man! Ain't you never heard of foreplay? ::smokes::

I think the campaign was the foreplay.

That would explain why this is one hell of a climax, no?

Also why it's so quick!

Let's hope his stamina is better than ours.

This was potentially a bit troubling at lunch time given his past comments: Two U.S. missile strikes kill 17 in Pakistan, sources say

Yeah, heard about that. We have to see how it is addressed (if/when it is) to really know what to make of the fallout.

::nods:: That's what I meant with the line about the "global gag rule." That's what the ban on funds for any group promoting or even mentioning abortion abroad as part of its health provision was called. It is a political football that gets tossed back and forth when power changes hands. (Clinton repealed it after the previous Republican presidents enforced it. Bush re-enforced it. Obama has re-repealed it.) At least we have it gone for the forseeable future?

I don't get it. Why bring it back? My own personal beliefs on abortion aside, shouldn't that money be spent domestically?

We do a lot of foreign aid, especially with global health initiatives. The idea is (and it's a sound one) that combating the problems of communicable diseases is in our interests. When it comes to reproductive/gynocological health, the interest is both selfish and altruistic--we help people engage in smart family planning, and there is less stress on limited food resources in addition to fewer diseases, like AIDS, which we are all better off not spreading around.

Would that money be better off spent here is not the issue. (Besides which, given the prevalence of abstinence-only programs, it might NOT be better spent here.) We are a nation that can afford charity and to do good works, so we have a moral imperative to do so. As to why the global gag rule goes back and forth, well, some people believe that they have a moral obligation to save women from themselves and their own choices even when it means forcing them through labor after labor even when it's obvious the child will not survive (or the mother won't). PEPFAR, Bush's program to combat the spread of HIV, even went further--pushing a prescribed percentage of monies at abstinence-only. No condoms, no nothing. From a public health point of view, acknowledging reality and doing the best one can to work around it is more practical and effective than forcing moral imperialist moral codes. But if you think you're saving TEH BEBBIEZ and to stop people from having TEH SEXXX, you don't really care if they're punished with fistulas and AIDS, do you?

My gym had a sign posted today: "3 reasons why Obama should make a good president: 1) He exercises 6 days a week. 2) A strong body has a strong mind." And I forget what 3 is.

6 days a week!

Uh... by that standard, George Bush would've made a great president, too.
