I never had any real fear we wouldn't. Kripke seems pretty well trusted and Supernatural is a huge draw for them. That's actually the problem--the team-up of Smallville and SPN is too solid for them to break without a firm replacement. With all their other genre shows falling apart before they even get made, they keep coming back to Smallville.
Kripke seems pretty well trusted Really? What gave you that impression? They waited until after the s2 finale aired to renew the series, and even then they cut the budget (hence the lack of awesome cock rock in later seasons). I don't think Supernatural was ever a sure thing.
It was on the strength of the Smallville/Supernatural combo that I thought both were relatively safe. I have no specific evidence, just an impression that, given how steady Smallville has been for them (and it has, I can't knock that), they wouldn't break up the two, especially given that the CW hadn't had a new hit show in forever.
It's entirely possible that's an exaggeration and my exposure to huge SPN fangirls skews my idea of how popular this show is...
I wonder if Reaper could fill the role of Supernatural lead-in. It's approximately in the same genre as these, even if it leans more towards comedy. I'm looking forward to its season 2 next month, and am hoping it does well enough to get picked up again (and maybe even moved out of "mid-season" status).
Reaper might work--it's less of a melodrama than Smallville. I think they're keeping it closer to comedies, though, which does make sense, too. I never kept up with Reaper, so I'm not sure what staying power it has. Then again, I wouldn't have predicted Smallville would be on past season three...
In that case, it might be a good counterpart to Supernatural since that does sort of the same thing--uses MOWs to develop an ongoing plot for each season arc. However, two exactly similar shows in that regard might not be as interesting to watch side-by-side. God knows Smallville and Supernatural don't work because they're similar but because they're both genre shows meant for different hours--i.e. Smallville is the earlier, fluffier show, Supernatural is the later, more adult show.
