What did I say? What did I say? Did I say that I would end up doing a shit-ton of work I didn't need to do or what?

Except I cannot get too pissy with this one girl because her computer completely died this week. The fact that she went and did the work somewhere else shows she wasn't intending to leave the work all to me. However, she was the last of the three of us to give us her part of the lab write-up, and she managed to put the wrong numbers on the wrong axes in the one figure she had to make herself. She also wrote a paragraph about it. You're supposed to do a small paragraph as part of a figure legend. For the actual write-up, you have to do a separate little essay.

She had one thing to do, too. My part was the longest, and to be totally honest, I leapt to take that part because I figured that left the least for everyone else. So I was already budgeting less to my group members as was, and I still had to do the one question and one figure for her. (In contrast, my section had four questions, one figure, and two tables.)

THIS IS WHY I DON'T LIKE GROUP WORK. Sigh.

Apparently, some professors at Stern have a policy regarding group work, that if everyone in the group complains about one person being useless, that person's grade will be significantly lower than the group's. I'm not sure how it works in practice (and it seems rather abuse-able, at least with non-mature folks) but it's a nice attempt to solve the free-rider issue.

We'll see, of course, how I end up doing with group work (my first class is tonight). I have no idea how much of a perfectionist I'm likely to be.

Best of luck to you. I'm just glad that this particular girl also turned out to be a flake and has dumped us for the group work involved with class. I'd just as soon try again with someone else and risk getting it wrong than try again with her where I definitely will.

I like that idea in theory, of balancing group work. I dunno if it would be better to do one-on-ones with the teacher or anonymous reports or what, but there should be a way to report abuses. Then again, even though I know I'm not wrong in this, there's always the fact that I'm probably too anal when it comes to group work...

Maybe they could have behind-the-scenes cameras, like on Top Chef or Project Runway, but have the judges actually watch it :-P

Ha! No reality shows for my part, thanks. I would prefer not living on camera. It would make me even more hesitant to say anything, which would lead to an eventual meltdown.
