He what?

I slept in this morning because I killed myself yesterday working and this is what I've woken up to. I'm beginning to wonder if it isn't the first terrible clue that this is all a dream.

And if it is a dream, er, I hope it's not the kind related to my first Etsy purchase. (For [livejournal.com profile] viridian--sorry, it got buried in Twitter.)

I thought the same thing, at first, but now I'm all "COOL!" I have more in-depth thoughts than that, as well, but for now I'm just gonna stick with cool.

And COOL you got that shirt! I am addicted to Etsy, no lie. It's where I get most of my vintage clothes, because the vintage shopping in my town is tragic.

Re: Etsy--I thought about it all week, like a good girl and decided I still wanted it. Thanks so much for the link!

Also, the Nobel Prize. THE NOBEL PRIZE. Really? Really. Seriously, is Bono pissed? Have Bill and Melinda Gates revolted yet? I mean, what?

yeah I thought that was a bit premature too.

Have you heard about the aussie blackface skit incident? I'm embarassed about that, especially when people on American shows like the view are saying things like "oh and they treat the aborigines badly there don't they" "yes that's right." which is an uninformed gross and unfair generalisation. Australians are as conscious of aboriginal issues as Americans are of African-Americans or American-Indians. And are not actively or maliciously trying to treat them badly like she made it sound.

It's unfair to judge all Australians as racist based on the poor judgement of one small group. It's as if I decided based on George Bush that all Americans are stupid illiterates who can't even string a sentence together.

Yeah, I heard Harry Connick Jr got himself in all sorts of trouble about disliking that act, too. It's grossly wrong to make crass generalizations--like I could say that a guy with that strong of a Southern accent probably shouldn't be the first one casting stones about racism...but that would imply that I think all Southerners are racist. So I won't.

It's interesting the question about how we treat indigenous peoples. When I took a class about Aboriginal/Colonial interaction at Uni, I kept thinking about how, generally, attitudes towards black people in the US were pretty much better. Then I realized that black Americans aren't our indigenous people. I had just made a link in my mind based on color, not on correct historical fact. It was a slight oversight, but it says a lot about American attitudes towards our native peoples that when people accuse us of racism, we don't even think of them first. So what's worse? Australia's current patronizing, frequently demeaning treatment of its Aboriginals or America's patronizing, dismissive treatment of its natives? They're both really bad.

Oh I agree with Harry that the act was tasteless and not funny. And he was actually vey diplomatic about it, saying he recognized it hadn't been meant maliciously, but that it still touched on a sensitive issue.

What I didn't like was Joy Behar's implication that all australians are racist with a complete disregard for aboriginal concerns. I don't think she really knew at all what she was talking about. And Australian relations with indigenous people may not be perfect but we do try - especially the historic apology by the Prime Minister.

I mean we may be far from perfect but like you said, it's not like America can claim to have a much better record of indigenous relations. People in glass houses etc.

People in glass houses just tend to think that they can see the dirty windows in other people's houses better...

I wouldn't let any talk show hostess get to you. They're not even marginally smarter than the audience they cater to.

Ahaha yeah I was just thinking this is the same show where in a discussion on Polanski Whoopi Goldberg tried to distinguish between "rape" and "rape rape"...

Also, I have been watching a lot of the daily snow and I am madly
in love with Jon Stewart. Sometimes when he's particularly bouncy and wide eyed and grinning he reminds me of a muppet. XD

I need to start watching that again. It's more factual than Countdown, and a lot funnier.
