I just finally went and watched the trailer for Frank Miller's Sin City. It's been up for ages, and Superherohype.com links to it at the top, but I just wasn't that interested. I was bored this morning (couldn't sleep), and I stared blankly at the pictures at the top and one of them is Jessica Alba's poster for Sin City. So, what the hell, I clicked on the link and got directed to Apple Trailers.
This trailer is awesome. I want to see this movie. Forget that I have no background on the graphic novel, forget that some of you don't either. Go watch this trailer here. It's...breathtaking. It reminds me a lot stylistically of a cross between the Dick Tracy movie and Batman, all in the good way.
Wait, let me explain. First, you have the unrepetant use of color like Dick Tracy, where just because it makes no sense or might be a bit loud, the color is used anyway, and use to quite excellent effect. Second, the movie looks like it's shot in black and white, and, as Batman was one of the first to prove, black on black on black can work soooooo well for comic book characters jumping onscreen (that Batman had its share of riotous colors only made Sin City remind me of it more). It's a punishing, no-holds-barred promo, and it was just amazing. If the movie is in color, I'll boycott it, that's how good this trailer was. It was like a flash movie, crisp, bold lines, unforgivingly overshading or defining the shape of objects. A-fucking-mazing.
And the best part? Yeah, we had the obligatory who's-who, showing all the multitude of starts (let's just say Sin City can drop as many names as Ocean's Eleven if not more), but the character intros still made sense and still hid everything. This is a well done trailer. If you know what the movie's about from watching it, I'll eat my hat (or hair, or something on my head). They introduce the two leads, throw in glory shots of all the other gorgeous people, but it's more interesting for what they don't dwell upon. They flash this actor or that actress, but don't name him/her right away, and, one of the most famous (thank you, LOTR) isn't really shown at all: Elijah Wood shows up at the end as a shadow with illuminated glasses (such classic noir touch there, and done so perfectly), and you never see his face.
Wow. Who's up for the April movie? It's April 1st, 2005. Mark the calendars folks. Movie club has a movie for April! Now, to see about February and March movies...

Date: 2005-01-20 09:32 pm (UTC)BBC News announced today that actor Stephen Fry has joined the cast the cast of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy as the voice of The Guide, an electronic book that accompanies Arthur Dent on his travels around the galaxy.
This is looking good! :)
