God, I'm a sucker.
Some context: I am probably one of the only people I know who liked the Resident Evil movies. Or, I should say, I liked the first two well enough. The first is decently-paced, written well enough to enjoy, had genuine gross-outs (the elevator thing? WORSE THAN THE ZOMBIES), and some terrific action. (I will never get tired of the Mila vs zombie dogs scene. Never.) The second is ridiculousness scaled up, which is fine, and any irritation I had with it is vaporized by the fact that "Undead Gaudy Hooker #2" was a cast credit.
The third one was everything that is wrong with second-rate zombie movies that exist to make a quick buck or to be viewed instantly and just as instantly turned off via Netflix. Every cliche they could throw at the screen happened, and it was all abusively stupid. I liked where they were going with Mila Jovavich's character, even, and I hated that movie. I blame Ali Larter. I think Legally Blonde was the last time I enjoyed anything she was in. (FUCK YOOOOOU, HEROES!)
So, naturally, given that hatred, I should totally not want to see the fourth movie. It's continuing a story line that aggravated the shit out of me and it's being shown in 3D. I sat through one 3D movie, and that was only because it would have been utterly boring were it not for the visuals. (Guess which movie it was?) I hate 3D. It never works exactly right for me, and it gives me headaches, and it's distracting, and, well, fuck 3D, too.
But...but...I kinda want to see this movie.
Jill Valentine, who I wanted to dooooooooo omgsohard from the second RE movie is back (though not featured in any of the footage to date). That guy I had the embarrassing crush on from Prison Break is in it as Chris Redfield. (Oh, and hilarious side-note to all this: there is an XBOX 360 Prison Break game. If it weren't, like, $20? I would buy it for the LOLZ alone.) And, and! It's the Mila army taking out the entire world! Although somebody commenting on the trailer made this really, really good point:
Strictly speaking, from a strategic point of view, destroying the last remaining organization with any kind of scientific and industrial base, organized military, and support structure for their people might NOT be the best thing to do when the planet's been horrifically overrun by mutant ghouls. Even if the disaster WAS their fault in the first place
Yeah, okay, logic, I get it. Eliminate the zombies first, kill Umbrella second. Still want to see this movie.
So, er, does anyone want to go with? We can totally hit a matinee to avoid paying the highway robbery prices of a 3D movie. I'm also totally willing to go in disguise or provide them for those as would see it but would prefer not to be known to be seeing it.
