I'm the world's worst morning person. I alternate between being a zombie and being within a kind word of biting people's faces off. (Seriously, do not say "Good morning!" to me some days, you might lose a nose.) I hate getting up early, and if I worked a 9-to-5 job (versus a faces-saving 10-to-6 job like I've got), I'd probably explode.

One of the ancillary benefits of working for a university, however, is that they occasionally throw "initiative parties." Basically, any time Columbia decides to jump on one bandwagon or another, there's a little fair or expo about it. This morning, starting at 9, they were all about a bike-to-work initiative (that, and a secures shredding fest). As I am now biking to work regularly, this was relevant to my interests, so I actually--voluntarily!--got up to work early. It helped that the second I started to stir at my new, earlier alarm, Oscar was head-butting me in the face and being distractingly adorable. (I know he just wants food. Allow me my illusions that he just loves me that much.)

So, before I even got in--early no less!--to work, I had my bike registered against theft with the NYPD, picked up a discounted bike lock and got a free tune-up! That last bit was the best. Despite the fact that, before I even got on the damn thing, I had my bike tuned by a shop, I feel like something's been wrong. Whatever the tune-up guy did as far as the gears go, it's working for me. I've got to get readjusted to what he did with the seat (granted, something that needed doing, I'm sure), but otherwise, I'm happy happy happy.

Of course, getting up all of half an hour earlier to get that all done means I'll probably craaaaash hard tonight, but it's still worth it!

That's an awesome work benefit, even if it did mean getting up earlier than usual. :)

They have lots of these little fairs/fests/expos, and I so rarely motivate myself to go. While I was there, I was reminded that I need to bring my laptops over some time when they're marking those against theft, too.

You're not kidding. I haven't posted in over a week, which I'm sure is an LJ first, seeing as I, like, post even when on vacation.

We need to hang out more. You have to stop being so popular, though.

Hey, the cats head-butt me, and they always have food. (They only eat dry, so they have the big dispenser.) Maybe it is love?

I always thought they were trying to help me wake up so I could write in the morning...

I know it's at least partially love, since he's purring and all, but I think I read a study where they demonstrated that cats know to purr to get what they want. They truly are one opposeable thumb away from world domination.

My boss has a tiny, black Shih-Tzu that she brings to work - she looks like a little ewok. If she goes more than ten seconds without someone fawning over her, she'll start that big-eyed, pathetic whining, sometimes stretching out with her head down, looking up - I swear she knows EXACTLY what she's doing, manipulating all of us. I can't imagine being as susceptible if it were a Doberman or something - although, I don't think Dobermans would do that, really....

Please don't talk about crashing in a post about bicycling! Seriously, I saw a bicyclist get cut off in the bicycle lane by a car yesterday; he made it, but he screamed at the driver for it. It's frightening out there.

But then I nearly get clipped by bicyclists on the sidewalk, and my sympathy wavers.

I did get a very angry horn honk from a driver today. There was a truck that had failed to get completely around the corner as it turned right which was blocking everything in that corner. Pedestrians went around its back end, and so did I, and so did several cars try to do while simultaneously trying not to kill pedestrians and me. The one car just held his horn down for an age at me when I cut him off. Well, from his perspective I cut him off; reality is somewhat different, though I'm by no means blameless.

To date, that, and a near dooring are the only times I've come close to any incidents. Been thiiiiiiis close to wanting to Force Choke drivers, pedestrians, and other cyclists (WHO ALMOST RAN INTO ME WHEN THEY WERE GOING THE WRONG WAY ON THE BIKE LANE WTF THERE ARE LANES ON BOTH SIDE OF THE ROAD WTF ARE YOU DOING!!!!???), but ::knock on wood:: so far, so good.

Haha I've never been a real morning person at work either, although I do a good enough pretending. And you would probably hate working with me 'cause I enjoy being a retard and harassing coworkers. I'm not obnoxious about it or anything. I'm good at gauging peoples temperaments and do enough to make them laugh and cringe, but stop short of being annoying. There's no fun in not knowing when to say when. ANYWAY...

Great news about the bicycling to work and the tuneup! I hope you're able to stay motivated and take advantage of it until the weather no longer permits it.
