The whole fight over contraception has exposed a lot of ugly bullshit, which is actually great. Because sunlight is a great disinfectant, and too long have the same resentments and misogynist undertones been circling without full exposure. It's hard to take a lot of the time, especially when legislatures controlled by a) men and b) Republicans get to change laws that no one asked or wanted them to change. But I have to remember that this sort of thing exposes them for the ignorant assholes they are.

To whit: Responsible women shouldn't be having sex. No really, that's what some asshole in North Carolina said to justify turning down funds for family planning. Because sluts, you know:

Chairman Ted Davis said he thought it was a sad day when "taxpayers are asked to pay money for contraceptives" for women having sex without planning responsibly.

Call me a sex-crazed feminazi (thank you!), but I thought taking contraceptives was planning for responsibly for women having sex. There's a better quote where someone else says something to the effect of lamenting all the sex these women are having (presumably not within ten feet of him, seeing as he's a lady-boner-killer), but the one I've highlighted above was the most hilarious to me.

Someone on Bill Maher's show suggested that women do exactly what these men want--women should just stop having sex with them, Lysistrata-style until they back the fuck off. I know it would hurt some women not to be able to get their itches scratched (except the lesbians and bi-ladies; they can go to town). I think, therefore, we should mandate taxpayer-funded vibrators for all women until such time as we stop fighting the battles of yesteryear for women's rights.

If you mean *those* men, I suspect that's already the case.

If you mean *all* men...why do you want us all to suffer? Most of us fully support women wanting to have sex!

Besides, that other guy on the commission is an "abstinence kind of guy". So he's getting all the sodomy he wants anyways! That's not sex, right? The Bible says so (somewhere)!

Thank god for hulu. Now I can watch only the funny bits of SNL, which I will need to tide over the sex-crazed feminazi ban on hetero-normative sex!

Well, that and porn. Until the feminazis come for it.

Oh, your XXXTube is not safe, my friend. But it won't disappear entirely. More, if women get their hands on it, it will feature almost exclusively slash fanfiction. HA HA HA!

NOOOOO-wait, are you limiting "slash fanfiction" to the yaoi variety?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO-wait, most actors in gay porn are actually straight. Which means that they'll be affected by the ban as well.

SOLUTION! Brothers, we have but one course before us! We must ban sex with other straight men for cash until women stop their ban first! Until they accede to our demands, the only people having sex in America will be real gay people!

*slow clap while choking on drink*

Most gay porn involves straight men? That seems ... counter-intuitive.

It's a numbers game, really, and it's not especially different from lesbian porn in that regard. Homosexual scenes pay a lot more (for guys, we're talking orders of magnitude here) than straight scenes for both genders.

If you're a straight male porn star who isn't bothered by homosexual sex, just not aroused by it...well, they have a pill for that.

Besides the numbers game, there's also certain folks who manage relationships around porn that way. Jenna Jameson stopped shooting pornos with any man other than her husband and did a lot more female-female porn after she got married.

Taxpayer-funded vibrators?! Haven't you heard? Women aren't supposed to enjoy anything! And...and...vibrators are the same as sex! to...you know...those guys who don't know how it all works. Because what's worse than women having sex?! Women pleasuring themselves! BAD.

It's funny because vibrators, despite what they did, used to be not considered a sexual object. It was a medical device used, in all seriousness, as such. The sexual pleasure aspect was realized realllllly late, given that the doctors using them on female patients were basically acknowledging that the females were having orgasms.

Just goes to show men have always been a little clueless when it comes to women's bits.

Also if we let women have vibrators, they'll just use EVEN MORE birth control. Because obviously it's one pill per sexual activity... or something...

Yep. The whole shift from abortion to contraception is a great boon to pro-choicers, liberals, feminists, etc. Most folks, even if they're pro-choice, feel a little uneasy about abortion (which is why Clinton's "safe, legal and rare" formulation was smart politics). But the Pill? Only the most wild-eyed wingnuts have problems with it. It just shows how politically tone-deaf the conservative movement has become.

It's awful that it's taken going this far, over forty-odd years of men trying to stifle the gains of women's liberation, to have some push back. I mean, we've ceded the field with a lot of our own rhetoric ("safe, legal and rare" being part of the problem, for all that it short-circuited the other side) such that it could get to a point where the anti-choicers feel comfortable denouncing dirty sluts and attacking birth control. It's wrong that we let it get this far, and it's scary to think that even if we succeed in this fight, the fuss will die down and then the new assumption will be that birth control is controversial and most people are against it--kind of like we have these narratives that most people are against abortion (when actually they're just against other people's abortions, not the ones they needed).

I'm not sanguine about these developments, for good reason, but it's nice to know that there is some line against which this rightward push falters, even if it hasn't yet totally failed.

It pains me to admit that you're likely right. One of the unfortunate "features" of the American political system is that extreme positions don't really fail, they just mark the point just past where the new "moderate" is.

Like how much of the tenets of the Patriot Act are now considered "moderate". Or the public turning on Planned Parenthood at all. Or how anyone can have "reasonable concerns" about the "legality" of low-income voter registration drives/organizations.

On that score, you seem to be right, despite this ruling that mitigates the disaster. But when we're forced to push everything to court to get our Constitutional rights affirmed, to say nothing of nebulous rights that have been argued for successfully at any time afterwards (like the right to privacy), we've lost. (http://www.balloon-juice.com/2012/03/13/i-would-argue-this-is-no-different-than-taking-an-airplane/)

Grrrr, yeah.

It's never been more apparent that some section of the right has determined that everything they see as a right can only be a privilege to people who aren't them and that only they can be the gatekeepers for it.

That they often are, simply by virtue of the institutionalization of privilege, don't help anything.

You know, the problem could be solved equally well if the men -- responsibly! -- stopped having sex with women. Homosexuality for everyone! Or chastity. I hear men love chastity, just like us ladies.

Did you see the article with the Georgia representative who compared women to livestock? What a charmer.

The culture shifted rightward for so long, they feel they can now come out and say these things. First, you have the factually inaccurate statements, like the guy claiming 97% of Planned Parenthood's funding goes to abortions. (When told it was closer to 3%, his people--not even him!--responded that it wasn't meant to be a factual statement.) Then you have the men making baldly sexist statements, which sometimes come with a bonus of being super patronizing! Like the Arizona law where women can be forced to look at ultrasounds before aborting--because they need to know! They don't know what it is they do!--and then the other law that says doctors can avoid telling them shit about a pregnancy if they think it'll lead to abortion.

The bad thing is that we have a culture, that they chipped away at so they could vent such idiocies and hatred. The good thing is that we now know what they really think (women are like pigs! women are like spare tires!) and can start to adjust accordingly.

I would say yes, but I think there'd be some added desperation on all sides to kick these bastards out of power if nobody was getting any.

At the very least, though, I'm going to insist women check political affiliation before agreeing to sleep with anyone.
