Yipes! That means I've got to get things done!

I've managed to forget a lot of things already and it's only 10:30. I've not forwarded myself the list of apartments I wanted to check out, I didn't charge my iPod, forgot the book I wanted to read, and I'm not even sure I have my wallet on me. At least I remembered [livejournal.com profile] darkling1's story for tonight (sorry if some of my handwriting is more illegible than usual, I was working on the C this morning).

And let me take this moment to say a hearty thanks to [livejournal.com profile] infosatyr for some very excellent advice re: the kitties. So, night before last I stuck a sock in my door jamb on the advice of roommate Lisa, who said this would keep it from moving around in the frame. She was right and she was wrong. While the door closed much more solidly than it otherwise would have, she underestimated the determination of these kitties. One of them, probably Sam because I woke to mewling first, was still able to wiggle the door because at the bottom of it he had more leverage.

Last night, I implemented a two-sock solution and [livejournal.com profile] infosatyr's suggestion: wedge a bar of soap under the door. Worked brilliantly. With the soap being slightly deformed from the wedging, and being a solid, very frictiony, not moving type of thing, the bottom of the door couldn't move at all. I'll recommend it to Lisa when she's back tonight. One of the kitties meowed really pathetically and really loudly this morning (so loudly I was sure it was in my room somehow), and so I was up again, but thanks to the security of a firmly closed door and a sleeping mask, I went right back to sleep.

Until the guys doing whatever it is they're doing in the shaft starting banging away at nine. I'm lucky, I realize this, to be able to sleep in even as late as nine, but damn it, I don't have to be awake at nine, I can sleep in another ten-fifteen minutes and still make it to work early, let alone on time. I have no idea what the fuck they're doing, but it sounds almost like garbage pail drumming--it's probably hammering, but it has an odd hollow ring like striking plastic instead of wood or metal. I was brushing my teeth in the bathroom and there was all this noise of debris falling down the side of the building. Checking for Sam behind the stove (his new favorite place to be), I saw out the kitchen window that there was rope attached from higher up and some guy was smacking a paintbrush aganist the side of a plastic bin. Maybe that was the sound and the shaft just echoed it, but damn is it loud in the mornings....

Whoa, are you moving out?

BTW, I would've complimented you on your new hairstyle like everyone else except, well... I didn't notice anything had changed. Just obliviousness on my part.

I had the same apartment related question. You guys have such a great place in a pretty convenient location.

Well to answer both of you then, here's the story.

Our apartment has two major drawbacks as we see it. One, it's very expensive, and changes in our lives might make it a strain to afford. Two, it's very small. So, paying a lot for not very much but a great location and all is fine, but we could, we think, do better still.

Basically, we're looking for a new place only if it's significantly better on the problem areas of our place now. We're looking in the same areas as we did before, so we might stay in the same place just end up farther east or a bit south.

Well, I'm glad the three of you are sticking together. Plus, bigger place = place to hold D&D games, bwah hah hah.

Two, it's very small.

I just imagined you quoting the Tallest: "You've very small, Zim. You're a tiny thing." Even when you aren't around, you're quoting Zim! Ahhhhh!

Paying a lot for a great location and lots of space isn't so good either, it seems. I don't know if I can do better, but I can probably do cheaper. *grumble* Stupid apartments...New York...crap salary

It's funny how I'm always quoting Zim and stuff...

You just got into Zim!!!!

Couldn't resist. Anyway, don't grumble about your salary. It's oodles better than the one I should be getting and definitely bigger than the one I am getting. You might stumble on a great place yet, and you get to live with Liz and Megan, so that'll be fun too!

Yeah, that's a surefire way to end a social life. I can barely get people out to Astoria, you know. And when I see how much it affects people's plans, deciding whether or not they can do activities and hang out with friends, I don't think that's the option for me; it certainly may not be any cheaper when you factor in additional commuting expenses.

Oh, see, now you got me started!

Hey, convince these three to move to Astoria (nice Greek food, at least) and there may be a critical mass out here.

I loved Astoria and I would be thrilled to move back there!

This from the one who suggested moving significantly further away.

Well, because then the tradeoff would be for a bigger house, which would significantly offset the crappiness of living so far away. It's why people choose to live in the outer boroughs (sp? I can't spell that damn word, it doesn't exist where I'm from) instead of manhattan - because they get an actual apartment for the same price that a closet in manhattan would cost.

... if you agree with me, why did you bother arguing? Please date someone else, I can't be bothered with this. :P

I'm just saying that your reason for moving FURTHER away from the city is one of my main reasons for not wanting to be IN the city to begin with.

But, see, the city has interesting things. The suburbs don't. If I can't have the interesting things, then there needs to be significant compensation. Get it?

You mean like a much bigger, yet less expensive place to live, fewer noisy assholes around, quiet, nature, noticeably cleaner air...?

Yes. Stop disagreeing with me if you're just going to agree again.
