To those I haven't answered about my last post, I'm just giving up on it for now. No one is more frustrated by inability to rectify the myriad ways I approach one topic than me, I promise. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to drop something so fast, it's just a tad too depressing for me right now.

I distracted myself with a preview of the Serenity novelization. I have to say, having some experience with novelizations, that this one is pretty good. The selection up on Amazon has a rewritten account of the scene from Serenity Valley that was the opener of the episode "Serenity" (let's have a Pee-Wee's Playhouse "Woooooo!" everytime I have to write 'Serenity,' okay? WOOO!!!!). It has all the dialogue faithfully represented and it's got a good rhythm to it. Think I might have to pick this one up. I've bought more embarrassing novelizations in my day, for movies I didn't like half so well or that weren't half so smart as Serenity. So, why not?

Also, WOOOO!!!

I skimmed through it at Midtown a while ago (which I may have mentioned) and I didn't like its interpretation of some of the ending, and it included some additional dialogue between Mal and the Operative. Overall it looked like a pretty faithful adaptation, with at least some (minor) tweaks to the lines from the movie, and oddly enough it ends with a poem... I think the guy who wrote it is obviously familiar with and cares about the material, and approached this as much as a "real" novel as he could.

Let's here a big "wooo!" for Keith deCandido. I've liked everything of his that I've read so far. Granted, I only started reading his stuff after I met him… Whatever, he knows I'm a fangirl.

I know he wrote the book for the original April release and was pissed when they pushed back the release date after he'd stayed up for a week to get it done. I suspect line discrepancies are due to script changes in production. It's a common problem in novelizations – I doubt they tell the novelist much of what goes on during filming.

I've been meaning to pick it up but haven't had a chance yet. Keith's one of the Malibuvians, so if you want a signed copy (don't know why you would, but just in case) feiran or I could get one for you.

I also have to say that when I found out last February that he was doing the novelization I almost hit the roof. Soooo jealous.

The novelization is okay. What I'M excited about is the fact Steven Brust has a Firefly novel ready to be sent in to a publisher. I don't know if he was asked to do it on spec, or if it's something they intend to publish at all, but OMG STEVEN BRUST.

As far as I know, they are planning a series of Firefly novels, have a bunch of proposals, but haven't signed anyone yet.

Do you know if that plan's changed at all? You know, with the movie's middling performance at the BO? I hope not, though I do hope any novels will be better than some of the Buffy ones I've read. (Egads.)

I think the only things the BO of the movie will affect is whether the books are set before or after the BDM. And it's looking like they'll be set before.

Steven Brust is a prolific sci-fi author, but the only novel you ever need to read, IMO, is To Reign In Hell which is a take on the war in heaven, and the Fall, etc. Angels and Satan and -- ooh, it makes me tingle. I highly recommend it, particularly if you have any interest in the mythology it's based in. Anyway, he is apparently a massive Firefly fan, so.

Hey, don't worry about it. You can always quote the aphorism about consistency being the hobgoblin of little minds....
