...another thousand movies I've watched. No, not really. Since I can't possibly capture your attention or wow any of you with my books-read-this-year total, time to do my annual recap of media I've consumed in 2008.

There seems to be a cap fast approaching, as I saw only three more movies in 2008 than I did in 2007. Television, however, fell off dramatically (25 seasons this past year versus 46 in 2007), and frankly, I'm astonished. I've been exercising regularly while watching episodes of television since July. I suppose the caveat there is that since I've been forcing myself not to watch shows when not exercising, I haven't been breezing through entire series of shows in a weekend. (::coughcoughDoctorWhocough::)

My recs and trends beneath the cut!

I said I wouldn't write about books. Naturally, I wrote THE MOST about them. )

And that's the year that was.

I'm sure the Whedon-files have read this already

Not to dismiss the Joss' opinion on the matter, but womb-envy is no more a predominant explanation for sexism and misogyny than penis-envy explains the psychology of women. It is, no doubt, a secret fear and source of mistrust, but the biological imperative of survival is more complicated than simply "You have what I want."

In fact, biologically speaking, men don't envy women; they envy other men (Bateman's Principle). This is true in non-sentient species as well as man, hence the multitude of adaptations of both male and female members of different species to select for and against particular individuals. Females, because of their larger investment of energy in the production of offspring, have to be choosey about partners, and the ones best evolved to select for favorable traits among partners will produce the most, healthiest progeny. Males must then evolve to compete for their fewer females in such a way that they both succeed in winning and mating and prevent other males from undoing their hard work.

Otherwise? Not a bad article from the Joss. I just wish that the Pandagon thread about it hadn't immediately de-volved into fans shouting down fans about whether or not his works count as feminist or not. ...which I'm going to do now myself. )

Womb-envy or not, there's nothing he's saying about how stupid and perverted the treatment of women is that is anything but right and righteous. It's been said before, true, and we shouldn't make a bigger deal of a guy saying this than a girl (equality is the goal, remember), but I support spreading this message around if only because it a) ends optimistically with a call to (positive) action; b) is being said by someone with the attention-getting power of a hundred or thousand voices; and c) is coming straight from one of geekdom's idols and thus is deserving of my fannish praise.

Wonder of wonders, I didn't actually mind last night's BSG, though I can't say I have the slightest clue what on Earth the lawyer was doing. Or why the "bad guy" did whatever he was doing. I think I was distracted by the fact that the lawyer was totally Badger from Firefly and by trying to figure out what accent it was he had.

I still love Anders. He breaks my heart for being so wonderful. Next week looks promising hum dinger of a trailer, I tells you )

And somehow I missed that this is one of three episodes of the finale. I guess it just caught me by surprise that the show is ending so soon for the season because, uh, nothing's happened since New Craprica.

Badger, y'all. As a lawyer. A strangely alluring lawyer. Rocking the stubble.

A Television Without Pity review/recap of Serenity!!!

Should be most excellent ::sets off to read::

ETA: This is the most awesome quote yet: "[Simon] comforts [River], but she's in a talking mood. Endorphins, you know. The last time I killed a bar full of people, you'd think I was on crystal meth!" I love you, TWoP!!!

A link kindly provided to me by [livejournal.com profile] linaerys about the class conflict in Firefly/Serenity has been eating my brain for the past twenty minutes because, being bored as nuts around work, I am doing nothing but thinking on a plot bunny I plucked from my brain last week and how to work it out. It's not what the article itself talks about that I've been considering, however, but something brought up in the comments to it:

Just how the heck does the Companion Guild work anyway? )

To those I haven't answered about my last post, I'm just giving up on it for now. No one is more frustrated by inability to rectify the myriad ways I approach one topic than me, I promise. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to drop something so fast, it's just a tad too depressing for me right now.

I distracted myself with a preview of the Serenity novelization. I have to say, having some experience with novelizations, that this one is pretty good. The selection up on Amazon has a rewritten account of the scene from Serenity Valley that was the opener of the episode "Serenity" (let's have a Pee-Wee's Playhouse "Woooooo!" everytime I have to write 'Serenity,' okay? WOOO!!!!). It has all the dialogue faithfully represented and it's got a good rhythm to it. Think I might have to pick this one up. I've bought more embarrassing novelizations in my day, for movies I didn't like half so well or that weren't half so smart as Serenity. So, why not?

Also, WOOOO!!!

Title: Sum of Their Parts
Fandom: Firefly-Serenity
Author: Meridian
Rating: PG-13 (deals with death and violence)
Summary: River loses herself in the stream and lets herself be a little of everything that everyone else is.
Warning: Spoilers for Serenity (a.k.a. The Big Damn Movie) as it is set during the montage at the end of the film
Disclaimer: Joss owns every last one of them, from characters to personified objects like Serenity herself (See? Personification happening all around us!)
Author’s Notes: Written for Shanelle’s Two Lines Fanfiction Challenge, this piece is dedicated to three extraordinary betas/critics–[livejournal.com profile] deepredbelle for her cheerful encouragement, [livejournal.com profile] darkling1 for his extensive edits, and [livejournal.com profile] ivy03 for her spot-on problem solving. All three of them did me a tremendous favor and put more effort into fixing the piece than I could have thought to ask for. So anything that leaps off the page as the suck? That’s totally mine. Kudos to [livejournal.com profile] newredshoes for trying to sort out a title for me (hope you like what I went with!)
Feedback: Yes, please.

I've been trying to google this and running into a wall. Can anyone point me in the direction of the map of the Allied planets from Firefly/Serenity? I know there's a picture on the interweb somewhere of which planets make up the Core, the outers, etc.

Help a fellow geek out, won't you?
