Last night's dream featured a pair of jeans with legs tangled around and around on some telephone wires in front of the house across from my parents' house upstate. [livejournal.com profile] feiran came into my room to bug me to lend her a specific pair of my jeans (they have ribbons down the legs) so she could chuck them at the pants and somehow dislodge them because she wanted her pants back.

Reluctantly, I loaned her the pair, threatening her mightily if she got my second favorite pair of jeans stuck up there, too. Because I'd already lost my first favorite pair to a microwaving accident. She said not to sweat it--when she got the other pair down, I'd have two pairs again.

uhmmm...

Microwaving accident? I hope there's more detail there.

This could be interesting.

No, that's just what I told her. These things happen in dreams all the time. You know you can/can't do somethng or something has happened because it just has.

"...because she wanted her pants back" and "...I'd have two pairs again" don't mesh. Also, you grew up here - you should know better than to call lower Westchester "upstate". Like we have cows or something.

Yeah, that occurred to me, too. It didn't make sense that she wanted the pants for herself and for me--unless she was just trying to get me to give her my pants. It was a dream. [livejournal.com profile] feiran is a crafty liar, what can I say?

Sorry about the upstate comment. It's rubbing off on me, this city attitude.

It's true...

Westchester is not a borough of the city. They don't pay NYC taxes. So it technically IS "upstate."

Am I wrong? Or are you giving me that look just because you Westchester people are on par with Long Islanders?

We are not LI'ers. We don't have silly accents for starters. And it's not true. We're barely thirty miles away from the city and there's easily four hundred miles above the city before you run out of state. That is upstate.

I didn't say you were LIers. Merely on par with them. LI is less than 30 miles from the city as well. They ALSO don't pay city taxes, and are not a borough of NYC. Accents or no, LIers are another set of people who WANT to call themselves NYers, but are only so as members of the STATE. NOT New York City.

And yes, I get your meaning of how "upstate" is farms and cows and such, but once you leave the confines of the Bronx, that there is upstate.

Which is why I blew a raspberry at you. It's not upstate! It's in the lower quarter of the entire state, so it's not "upstate." If you say, "it's upstate from NYC," fine, as a directional locator, but not as a general statement because "upstate" is not a descriptor of a place so far south in New York State that it's practically hugging New Jersey.

By one definition. Folks who live in, say, Albany (or Binghamton, right on the PA border) wouldn't necessarily consider themselves "upstate."

HA HA HA! I love wikipedia!

"the term "Upstate" sometimes used to refer to the whole of the state besides New York City and Long Island (though this definition is often criticized as meaningless and provincial)"

YESSSSSS....

"meaningless and provincial" are about perception. just as being a New Yorker is a perception. A perception OTHERS have of you.

When you say, "I'm a New Yorker." People outside of the US (and in most cases, even in the US) ask: "Really? Which BOROUGH? (note: NOT 'which county')" And if you answer them, "Westchester" or "White Plains" you get the stink eye. It's like "WTF dude, I thought you said you were from THE CITY." If you say "Brooklyn", or "The Bronx," even "Staten Island," there's that hint of recognition.

It's "the FIVE boroughs." not "the five boroughs and those wannabe suburbs."

Look at the map on there...even there, the lower half of Westchester (below, say, I-287) is in red. Man, dude I knew at CU who lived his whole life in the Bronx thought Yonkers WAS a borough!

It's in red. That means "considered" part of NYC. It's NOT. dude you knew in CU thought Yonkers was part of NYC. It's not. If you pay the extra taxes a "New York City Resident" pays, then you're IN New York City. Never mind property taxes. Most NYers can't afford to do anything BUT rent.

Why do I even bother? It's not like being a New Yorker means anything anymore. Damn Disney/Giuliani/Yuppies...

Shit, I'm a Yuppie! *hangs head*

*goes off muttering*

Actually it says areas in red "form the core of the NYC metropolitan area." The point is, "upstate" as "all of NYS outside of NYC" is not a useful definition, and it generally carries a connotation of hickdom (which real upstaters would deny, but which we downstaters know is there) which isn't warranted. We do tend to vote Democrat, at least.

Oh, btw, you randomly appeared in my dream the other night. Lately, my subconscious has been re-editing all of the old Doctor Who theme songs, and your face appeared ala the old theme song freeze frame. So, yeah. You were a Time Lady in my dream. :)
