Coney Island tripping was fun. That place is so ghost-y already, given how much they've shut down in order to make it over anew. It's sad to think of those rides and such I didn't go on as not being there in another few weeks, but on another level it's completely understandable as some of the rides are sufficiently old and decrepit enough not to instill me with confidence in their lasting much longer anyway.

It's great that they'll keep the "classic" coaster, the Cyclone, though its memory will probably be raped when the new theme park opens to pretend like it is anything like the old Coney Island was. Personally, I'd rather they kept the tilting ferris wheel, as it was both different from normal ferris wheels and fun. Also, unlike the Cyclone, it didn't give me sprained neck muscles. No, seriously, my neck is killing me. I was so tensed against the painful jerks and throwing about you get on the Cyclone that instead of getting whiplash, I just pulled every muscle in my neck. Joy.

I realize that you like roller coasters, but did you ever think that the fact that you keep getting hurt on them is, perhaps, a sign from your body that they aren't the best of ideas?

Well, it's a pick-your-poison thing. I'm willing to try everything, which is clearly the problem: not every single roller coaster is good for you. Many were built to induce pain--see: The Great American Scream Machine. In the Cyclone's case, the coaster is old, has clearly been kept barely operational status for a long time, and wasn't built with any of the safety standards that might have made for a smoother ride.

I think roller coasters are GREAT ideas. It's just that a lot of them, especially older ones, aren't the smoothest of rides. I was very good and stayed off all the spinny ones, though, even though the tilt-a-whirl looked fun and I was dying to get on the Scrambler since it had been ages since I'd gone on one. I would have gone on those had I known how jarring the Cyclone was.

While if you had gone on that paragon of coasters, Millenium Force, you'd be going at 90 mph with no neck jarring whatsoever. Smoothest coaster I've ever been on.

Please tell me you didn't forget to go to Totonno's while you were out there?

Seeing as I don't know what you mean, I guess we did not.

Doh-ith!

Totonno's is one of those "original" pizza greats that have been around for decades. I think they've been open (the Coney Island location) since the 1920s (checks http://www.totonnos.com/Aboutus.html )..... ok yeah since the 1920s ^_^ Let's just say you missed out O_O Sure you can go to one of the ones in the city, but the one out in Coney Island is a big deal that should not be missed.

There's one up here, too. They're okay.

I thought they bit. For all that people rave about them, I hope the original place is better. If so, they really need to work on quality control if they're going to expand into a chain.

We did go to that one on like, their opening weekend or something, too. They were brand new. I think it takes any new place a while to hit their stride.

I've only eaten at the one in Coney Island and it was damn good. Stole some cooking ideas while watching them too ^_^

Well, we did go to Nathan's, and that's pretty Coney-Island specific, right?

Listen you food snob, there's nothing wrong with Nathan's!
It is the first Nathan's, too, so it has as much right to be visited as your pizza shop! And, as it is WAY more famous than Whoever's Pizza Place, I give you a fie and a raspberry! :P!!!

Mmmmmmmm..... raspberry ^_^ <confessions of a raspberry fiend>

But sadly Nathan's Coney Island (at least last time I checked) is pulling there dogs from offsite like all the other Nathan's chains. That being the case there is no difference between locations (at least in the NYC area). On the other hand Totonno's is the kind of place that Ray's looks up to.... and we all know how famous Ray's is. A quality pizza is a work of art, and seeing it made in a more classic way is a sight to behold. Sadly all the art in a hot dog takes place where it is made...

Dude, y'all went to Coney Island? You were ... oh, like 4 train stops away from our apartment.

I was out with friends not in our circle, so there wasn't much of a chance of diverting them off on the way there, and we were too bushed on the way back to stop in and say hi. Otherwise, we would have done, surely!

But, my goodness, you live out really far!

It's cool. We weren't home yesterday evening anyway. :) Just remarking that you passed within blocks of our place, especially if you were on the D or N.

As for living out really far... Not really. We're about a half hour from midtown. :) Not much worse than from Washington Heights. And closer to downtown.

The Cyclone has always been painful.

And I had no idea they were redoing Coney Island. That's sort of meh.

It's sad for losing something that's been there that long, but yeah, what's there isn't terrific, so...

Deno's Wonder Wheel is also a designated landmark (along with the Cyclone and the currently inactive Parachute Jump) and is therefore protected from demolition.

I am going to miss that place so badly when it's gone. But I keep reading rumblings that the development has been halted. Coney as we know it may have extra life in it yet.

Interesting. Personally, it wouldn't surprise me if development doesn't go as planned. It would be hard to put anything substantially profitable into that space. It's like Six Flags, where you can expand into the woods when you need another attraction, and it isn't an area of that much money. It would do better, perhaps, to rearrange--put more of the games along the boardwalk and keep the rollercoaster and ferris wheel aside for people who want to get off the stroll-and-game segment of the place.

I dunno. It would cost a lot of money to upgrade, money that would not be made back quickly if at all. And if you're trying to work a park around not one but three landmarks, aieee.
