I woke up today figuring that, when I did get around to browsing LJ, the results of the primaries yesterday would be all over the place. I guess not. I went to the Times to check, and they've got something about tornadoes on the front page? What the hell is going on?

What's going on is that there was nothing decisive between Obama and Clinton, so no really exciting news. Oh, and McCain is WAY ahead now. Joy.

Sigh. I swear McCain wasn't a nutjob in 2000. But then again, a lot of people were more reasonable-seeming back then.

I think the problem is that the Republican party as a whole as taken a 90-degree turn to the right, making them way more whacko than they ever were. At least, from what I remember, the biggest differences between the two parties were mostly about economics and social programs...

They still are. Dems believe the latter should exist; Repubs don't. On the former, the two parties are alike only in that they don't know how to work it.

I mostly meant that I don't remember quite the rabidity about teh gheys or OMG birth control kills. These are the things that make me think Republicans are crazy. Especially given that they preach "small government," but they want to be in everyone's bedroom? Hypocrites much?

Eh, when it boils down to it, I haven't ever really liked party politics at all. :(

Have you read What's the Matter with Kansas?. Addresses the "since when has hating people been cool?" aspect of the conservative bent of late. Basically, there are people who are poor and never getting rich who you can get to vote for you on outrage alone based on social issues that won't really ever change. Then, when they don't change, the people still vote for the anti because he promises he will, eventually, change them. Promise much, deliver little, let the poor continue to suffer and further drive their rage to only the one outlet: gay-bashing, abortion-hating, Christ-preaching conservatism.

No, I've never heard of that, much less read it.

And you know, I'm totally cool with people being against homosexuality, or abortions, and loving to preach about the "love" of Jesus Christ and all that crap, as long as they keep it out of politics. It's one thing to have personal beliefs and another to go around killing people because they're different in some way.

You may swear he wasn't, but he really was -- his only changes have been that he now approves of torture and he's now willing to cozy up to AND vote with the religious right, as opposed to just voting with them.

Sigh. I guess I was biased by the interview I saw where he wouldn't say he'd automatically prevent his daughter from having an abortion if she wanted one. Doesn't matter if that was true then or not, since it's definitely not any more, but it biased me to think he wasn't just writing off these concerns. Alas.

What about Tom Brady or Brittany? He lost; she's nuts. Do we still care?

Yeah, unfortunately, it's hard to figure out what to say. They both won, sorta, maybe. Those states with late primaries may decide it after all. (Or else the "superdelegates" decide it which would SUCK.HARD.)

Also, there's little point in trying to influence votes anymore since the NY/NJ primaries are over.

There are a couple of us who vote in the Texas primary in March, you know. :p

Yeah, I know. Still, that's one vote out of dozens...

Yeah, kinda pointless, no? I just have to be careful not to let my family know I'm not voting Republican. :p (j/k, family's been pretty good about JUST VOTE in the past.)

In such cases as these, it's best not to engage. You can't dis-relate yourself to these people (no matter how badly I wanted to after my cousin argued that it wouldn't matter who was president in 2004. Two Supreme Court judges later...)

Dad's old, and while he's a bit of a racist and homophobe, he's generally like "whatever." It's my uncle that I can't talk to. Especially after his arguing that gay people shouldn't be able to be in legally recognized unions because they don't procreate. He didn't appreciate me pointing out that he and his wife can't procreate EITHER, and therefore should have their marriage annulled. :p Ah, Baptists. >:/

Wow. Points to you for calling him on that bullshit. I'm impressed.

Yeah, I have an aunt who phrased a description of her daughter's missionary-like work as "preaching to the heathens." SHe's nice, but just you get her started on some topics...

Here's a rundown, hun. A bunch of party poo-bahs who aren't elected in presidential primaries or caucuses and who can vote for whoever they like.
