I can't believe how good The Watchmen is. I mean, I knew that when I read it the first time. But it's amazing how well it holds up and how all the extras at the end of the individual chapters are so interesting in their own right. I'm even MORE nervous about the upcoming film adaptation upon the reread given how dense the graphic novel is. There are plenty of things they can simplify (leaving out the older generation of heroes, for example), but aiyah. There is too much to do justice to it all.

However, if this new picture is any indication, it's still gonna look f'ing pretty. The look they've got. That's something at least (and more than Daredevil ever could boast).

Speaking of looks, take a peep at Harvey Dent on his bad day (not spoilery unless you really have no idea what they'd possibly do with his character in the upcoming The Dark Knight). Can't say I love the hair, though it does make a certain kind of sense that other versions have not. Scariest bit of all is that the make-up-free side is more scary than the other.

Last but not least (oh, there'll be more this Thursday, fer sure), three generations of the suit. GLEE.

Dent is definitely creepier than the Tommy Lee Jones version, I'd say. Actually, it does look more or less like the animated series, doesn't it? Except for the hair.

Definitely similarities, though I've now been informed it is a fake! Damn my eyes and not being able to tell the difference!

That Harvey Dent pic is a manip. :) It's a cap from The Black Dahlia. There have been no leaked pics so far, just of the Two-Face toy, and even as blurry as that sneaksy cell phone shot is, the scarring looks a helluva lot cooler than that manip.

Ah, well, that'll learn me to look at the pictures on SuperHeroHype with a less than jaded eye. It's funny, though, since that does look very like the toy. I suppose that's why, though.

You are so right about Watchmen. I think it even hold up politically. It's interesting looking at it from a post-911 perspective. (My apologies for using that tired term.)

I am keeping my expectations for the movie very, very low. Then I at least stand a chance of being mildly impressed. I just hope it doesn't traumatize me.

V for Vendetta had some radical differences from the graphic novel, but was still a very good movie. I'm expecting/hoping for the same from Watchmen.

I honestly preferred the movie because it cut out a lot of the pretentious Moore bullshit. However, I feel that Watchmen has less of that and more human interactions and depth that might be sacrificed for a look, and that would be really sad.

Hey, I liked a lot of that pretentious Moore bullshit!

I think the worst change, though, was to the ending. The took the dark ambiguity and painted a bright, happy, liberal face on it.

That's great. You go reread V a hundred times over and love that stuff, that's what it's there for. :P

I don't mind the changes to the movie, as I said, but you have to watch how much of a purist you insist on being with some translations. The film medium swallows certain endings and regurgitates others. Ambiguity is just not as well served in film. This is not to say it can't be, just to say that it's very hard and usually defeated by commentary. Look at the folk who complained over the ending of No Country for Old Men--that had an ambiguous sort of ending and it left most people dissatisfied.

For me the parts I liked the most from V for Vendetta were those that were the most faithful to the original graphic novel. But it was a decent version of the story, if different in intent from the original.

I just don't have a whole lot of faith in the people in charge of making Watchmen. On the bright-side though, the stills that I have seen so far look pretty damn good. (Though the guy they've got playing Rorschach looks a lot more like Spider Jerusalem than Rorschach.)
