What American accent do you have?
Created by Xavier on Memegen.net

Northern. Whether you have the world famous Inland North accent of the Great Lakes area, or the radio-friendly sound of upstate NY and western New England, your accent is what used to set the standard for American English pronunciation (not much anymore now that the Inland North sounds like it does).

If you are not from the North, you are probably one of the following:
(a) A Southerner who hates Southern accents and tries really hard to "talk right"; or
(b) A New Yorker or New Jerseyan who doesn't have the full accent

Take this quiz now - it's easy!
We're going to start with "cot" and "caught." When you say those words do they sound the same or different?

I had to whisper the words to myself to even know how I do pronounce things. I think this is about accurate, though I'm often confused for being southern. Comes from having cousins all over Georgia, I suppose. It doesn't help that I have to physically restrain myself from falling into other people's accents and speech patterns. I dunno what happened or what I did spending time with my older sister, but she and I are so alike in our speech patterns and mannerisms, it scares me.

All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. We must never, ever be boring.
Chuck Palahniuk

I cannot call to mind a single instance where I have ever been irreverent, except toward the things which were sacred to other people.
Mark Twain

An expert is a person who has made all the mistakes that can be made in a very narrow field.

I dreamt that I was on a boat last night, sitting below decks but in an open area, rather like a sumptuous shuttle or some such. The boat went too fast and water flowed over the side and flooded the area. The first thing I worried about were all the freshwater fish--mostly varietals of goldfish--that had been knocked over in the back of the boat. Everyone was like "Nah, they're fine, they're fish," but I was screaming at them that these were freshwater fish and the ocean water that had come over the side wasn't doing them any favors.

Dream-me and dream-Devin ran to pick up and scoop up goldfish as tiny as pin heads to the size of our hands and put them in any fresh-water container we could find--baggies of water, vases, everything. We'd get upset at all the ones quickly drying out on the floor and the ones that would go into the water but die anyway. It was maddening. And completely stupid. Because we spent the whole time alternating from going "Ewwww!" as we picked up fish with our bare hands to crying about how we were probably hurting them with the salts and residues on our hands and taking it like personal failure if any died.

Sheesh. Subconscious, what is up?

It told me I have no accent and therefore no local identity! Probably because I very consciously used to try to sound like the people on tv, and avoid both my mom's Southern accent and my dad's vague Pittsburgh accent.

TV'll do it. You watch too much more Canadian TV and you'll sound like them, too.

A fun post! :)

My accent came back as neutral American...probably on account of my growing up in the center of the country, and because they didn't ask if I get an Irish lilt when I've had too much to drink (which must be genetic memory or living in Woodside)

I like your quotes!

Your dream is fascinating - and it is so interesting the way our subconscious minds find personal metaphors for the troubles of the day, whatever they may be. I love it when people share their dreams. :)

I post any dream that doesn't personally mortify me to a degree that I then can't laugh at myself. If it's about people I know in uncomfortable, compromising situations, not so much. But trying to pick up goldfish? Really, WTF?

On the subject of accents: that test needs to be done to a person rather than taken by. I found myself being incredibly self-conscious about how I spoke. Weirdness.

Told me I had an Eastern New England accent ... I never thought I did but I remember that time I was talking at Symposium and you interrupted to say "OH MY GAWD YER FROM BAWSTON!" so I guess I do!

I misread that as "someone interrupted" instead of me. Because I was about to say, "Hey, I remember someone doing that!" I just didn't remember that it was me. But yes, it's there. It's not horrible, like a Southie accent or something, but it's a noticeable inflection.

Haha, wow. I know people from Boston and compared to them, your accent is only there now that I really really think about it.

New York City. You are most definitely from New York City. Not New Jersey, not Connecticut. If you are from Jersey then you can probably get into New York City in 10 minutes or less.

Close enough. My Yonkers accent is sometimes enough to make M want to strangle me. Even my mom used to comment on it.

I guess? Maybe I'm inured to it, living so close to Yonkers as I do.
