My granddad was in the Navy. I don't know much, though I know a little more than most. When John McCain, the poster child for cronyism and nepotism, claps a Chief Petty Officer on the shoulder, that's not respect. That's a goof-off patronizing a salior who proved himself to be a responsible motherfucker.

Keep smiling, Chief. Your respect of rank was better than McCain's.

Yeah, I saw that. I was like, way to pander McCain! And then of course Obama has to as well or it looks like he doesn't care about veterans...

Can I point out that Obama was lobbying for better benefits for vets long before he started running for president? I have the podcasts to prove it!

People are bound and determined to see veterans as untouchable. Unless they ever say the military isn't the most awesome thing that ever awesomed! (A la Kerry.) But no, some veterans are cranky bastards whose "service" doesn't give them a free pass to belittle those with less decorous service.

Nice to hear that about Obama. Unlike McCain not supporting the new GI Bill...

Bah, can I just say how sick I am of hearing people kowtow to McCain over being such a great "war hero?"

One of these days I want somebody in the Obama camp (not he himself, since he'd just look bad) to reply to that "John McCain knows how to win a war!" nonsense by saying "Name one war John McCain has won. I can think of one he helped LOSE, but not win..."

Meanwhile, he was a crappy pilot who cost Uncle Sam a durn sight of money with all his crashing, who talked in prison (well, torture works, I can't fault him too hard for that), and who never really had any leadership experience. He did a dangerous job, but it was just a job, and killing a bunch of Vietnamese people doesn't make you a mighty war hero.

He was a piss poor leader where he was one, and he never got any position through merit. I won't go into what happened in Vietnam when he was a POW because there just isn't anything to touch there. I can, however, point out that a POW ought to have known better about agreeing with a president who sanctioned torture. Fuck that noise.

Did you read the Rolling Stone article that gets into some of the details about McCain's military career?

Appalling, if true.

ETA: of course I posted this before actually clicking your links. :P

I was gonna say...

No, see that's why I got mad at the debate last night. A man who made Chief Petty Officer did serious work both as a sailor and a leader. McCain got his Dad to pull strings so his umpteen-billion crashes and demerits for behavior unbecoming didn't stop him from being Captain. I found his treatment of that sailor really, really patronizing.

Also, that article on McCain freaked me the fuck out. I couldn't stop reading even though everything I read scared the piss out of me.

I had heard about the article about McCain. Thanks for posting it. Freaky stuff, that. Now I am even more terrified by the idea of him winning. Also, it further solidifies my feelings that selfish people are evil.

And with the history of how he treats women, it is even more obvious that Palin is just a tool/object in his mind. I don't like her either, of course, but that is just sick.

Uh, trigger warning for this video, then.

Some part of me that believes misogyny that involves physical violence can't be tolerated in anyone we trust to llead others and that no one else would tolerate it either so this can't be true. On the other hand, I know better than to believe that part of me and it's entirely possible it is.

Sadly, this is what being tortured will do to people. (That, and being raised with phenomenal entitlement).
It's why I've been saying that McCain's service, while some would consider it admirable, is actually a disqualification for office in my view; when you take a man and break him, in many ways he will stay broken...

I remember that it was a joke--a joke!--in 2000 when he was running then and was on the Daily Show and they had a segment that said the parts of medical records that had been redacted said "John McCain is fucking crazy!" Sadly, they turned out to be right.
