(OH MY GOD, THERE ARE OTHER PEOPLE ON THE INTERNET WHO HAVE HEARD OF ANIMALYMPICS YESSSSSSS. No for reals, I almost launched myself across a table to hug the only other person I had ever met who'd heard of this movie. And that was like, last year.)

Firstly, some questions:

I have always been intrigued by Cowboy Bebop, but never really followed it. Would I be able to watch the movie with no knowledge of the show? And that said, is the movie good?

I have no idea what Perfect Blue is. Is it something worth Netflixing?

And now some suggestions:

Tokyo Godfathers is something WONDERFUL. Seriously. As is Graveyard of the Fireflies, although that's more sad wonderful.

Akira, Fist of the Northstar and Ninja Scroll are also really good. OH AKIRA. ♥

Looking through this list, I realized I've seen quite a few anime films, wtf. Surprise me! I'm more of an anime geek than I thought.

And lastly, some random love:

OH LAND BEFORE TIME. LAND BEFORE TIIIIIME. I totally had a Littlefoot stuffed animal.

Also, I've seen clips of the Adventures of Mark Twain, and WHOA. It looks dark and POSSIBLY TRAUMATIC FOR SMALL CHILDREN. I need to see that straight away. I won't forget to Netflix it this time. I WON'T.

Time to use my Spike Spiegel icon!

Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (also known as Knockin' on Heaven's Door) wasn't a bad movie. The animation is amazing for the fight scenes; it's fluid, very natural, and very, very quick. (The hero of Bebop, Spike Spiegel, is a master of Jeet Kun Do, the art pioneered/created by Bruce Lee, so masterful martial arts stuff is really crucial given that association.) It's not, however, a great movie, and seeing it might really spoil some of the series for you. Which would be a crime. Absolutely watch the series. Fantastic music, wonderful characters, tremendous art/direction/editing. I'm biased because it's the first anime series I ever watched start-to-finish, but it's still probably the best I've ever seen. Ever.

Perfect Blue is disturbing. There's no other word for it. It's good, tense, a little heartbreaking, but it's really perverse at points. The story centers on a pop idol from a girl group who wants to go it on her own as an actress. (Japan's reverence for its pop idols is very creepy in its own right, but that's just the backdrop.) Unfortunately, she has a hard time of it initially, and the first character she plays is sort of a mindfuck. At the same time, she had to deal with fans being very angry--one violently so--about her leaving the girl group. So, trigger warning, but definitely twisted and worth a view.

Whew. I thank you for the recommendations. I think I had Tokyo Godfathers from Netflix but sent it back unwatched. I believe my roommate has it, though, so I can always borrow it. Ditto just about all of those save the last two Satoshi Kan ones. So I'll definitely get around to them soon! Cheers!

The Land Before Time made me cry like nothing else when I was a kid. I was watching with my mom and bawling like a baby (I was maybe 10?) and wiping my face repeatedly so she wouldn't know. Of course, she did know. But when she asked me if I was crying, I sobbed, "Nooooo," even though a) she could hear that that wasn't the case, and b) um, she was sitting right next to me so she knew. (And it wasn't like we were at a crowded theater. This was at home!)

Adventures of Mark Twain mm? Will have to give it a look-see.

Very much so!

People say all this crap about how tough Chuck Norris is...but they forget...BRUCE LEE KILLED CHUCK NORRIS. In Return of the Dragon.

Gotta love a flailing ZQ icon!

Bruce Lee was amazing. My favorite rumor about him was that they had to slow the cameras down to even follow what he was doing so the audience could see. Whether or not that is true, it certainly beats the hundred million faux "Chuck Norris Facts" out there.

I luurrrve Quinto. Methinks he needs to jump off that Heroes ship, though.

Chuck Norris is boring and scary (Huckabee supporter *hiss*). Bruce will always be cooler than him.

Yeah, Heroes needs to just stop. Fortunately, tonight, it will for a while. After that, we'll see.

No one beside the review needs to watch this show. SRSLY. It is such crap. Bryan Fuller had one very good episode. And it's just slunk back into stupidity.

The only way to fix this would be to start killing off characters. Or, go back to what they promised they'd do in the first place, and just focus on an entirely new group of people and ne'er the old nor new shall meet!

Never saw it, never got into it. Which is strange, given that The Great Mouse Detective seems sorta similar to me. (With the ye olde-timey mice-as-people thing.)

Anthropomorphized mice is about ALL The Great Mouse Detective and The Secret of NIMH have in common. The book for The Secret of NIMH is far more engaging than the film, but I have to have a copy of both for nostalgia's sake. Oddly enough, my copy of the book is from around the time of the movie release, because it has a still from the movie on the cover, but it is very worn and loved.

Reason to see it is if you like The Prydain Chronicles, and if you want to see a PG-rated Disney animated film. (One of the few, if not the only...)

[ ] Wall-E (2008)
Didn't I see Wall-E with you?

Also, they left the Ice Age films off the other CGI list. I know a guy who does set lighting for that house.

Ha! I counted myself as having seen Wall*E but did not actually check it off. I've seen it enough times at this point to have even the boop-boops memorized.

My sister's former roommate's boyfriend worked on Ice Age. What does that make us? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

I'm pretty sure Song of the South is still unavailable, and film scholars the world over are clamoring for its release for its historical significance i.e. the racism.

Date: 2009-04-25 01:18 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] trinityvixen.livejournal.com
I heard rumblings recently that they were planning to release it. I remember some blogs I read mentioning this intention with raised eyebrows, but you're right, I never actually confirmed they'd gone through with it. I think it was in the news because they'd considered doing it recently, but apparently Disney decided to think better of it (good decision).

Date: 2009-04-25 01:22 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] droidguy1119.livejournal.com
Well, Disney is aware that it's racist. But it's an important film. It deserves to be on DVD. Any release Disney eventually puts out will definitely be a release focused on its historical relevance as opposed to entertainment value.

Also, you should see A Goofy Movie. It has great songs and it's a surprisingly good father-son bonding story (although your interest in such a thing may be low...). Seriously, it doesn't suck. The direct-to-video sequel is horrendous, but the first movie is actually a(n extremely minor) Disney classic.

Date: 2009-04-25 01:25 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] trinityvixen.livejournal.com
I don't know what to argue about Song of the South other than, yes, it should be preserved as part of film history. Does that mean it should be marketed and sold to families? Meh, I don't particularly care. (I also don't have a lot of faith that it wouldn't be put right next to other Disney films and draw some unconscious parallels between them.)

As for A Goofy Movie, I never watched the Goof Troop show because it never really interested me. I doubt I'm the movie's target audience anyway.

Date: 2009-04-25 01:40 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] droidguy1119.livejournal.com
Well, in keeping with a release focused on its historical relevance, it will be marketed to collectors and not families.

It really is good. If it's ever on TV you should watch it.
