I won't be organizing any outing to Star Trek. I was going to, but it's just been a crazy time in general. So, have fun Trekkies/Trekkers! May the Force be with you Live long and prosper?
I will probably see it at some point. If not with one of the groups going out, then with my mother over like Mother's Day or something. (I love that my Mom would like nothing better than to go see Star Trek for her Mother's Day.)
Fourteen reviews. Not a lot, and most are likely to be the uber-fans who got the sneak previews. I'm happy to be wrong about how awful this looks from trailers, but yeah, I remain healthily skeptical.
You have to work for a publication (online or offline) that gets 1500 unique hits a month and have 50 published reviews before you qualify for the Online Film Critics Society, which makes you eligible to add to the RT Tomatometer. And Todd McCarthy has been with Variety for ages.
I thought the trailers all looked great, but I don't know anything about Trek. In any case, don't you think the uberfans would be harder to convince?
Either way, even CHUD's Devin Faraci, a huge skeptic and longtime Star Trek fan said it was pretty good. I've only read one negative review yet, and it was unimpressed, not abjectly negative. I don't want to jump the gun, but don't be surprised if this is this year's Iron Man: critical and audience favorite.
Uberfans are also more likely to forgive for the sake of getting more. It's a delicate line to walk.
I'm totally unimpressed by the Star Trek trailer, and a lot of the Trekkers/Trekkies I know were likewise underwhelmed and worried. Like I said, I'm happy to have it succeed, but I won't be convinced that it will until I see it.
