Aside from May Movie talk and info-dumps (and one screaming declaration of my own awesomeness), I've been rather quiet on LJ lately. My apologies. Here, have some news that I've been collecting in the interim:

There will be a Deadpool movie!
Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] mithras03 for the heads-up on that. I'm glad to see that even the comic writers behind the character admit that God invented Ryan Reynolds to play Deadpool. It's true, you know.
(FYI: We're all seeing this movie. I don't care how and who I have to bribe.)

Dear Christ, Mormons really suck have really sucky practices.
I'm still going to get in trouble for that regardless of my attempt to correct that, but yeah, the fact remains that they need not to do anything that they are doing. When, do you suppose, will they have their major decline like the rest of the Christian sects are facing? Because until I see any evidence that they, too, will wane (and not, in fact, take over the world), I'm going to remain very hostile about their practices. Which I honestly don't want to do. If they would kindly KNOCK THAT SHIT OFF, since they're not supposed to be doing it anyway (no baptisms for non family members!), I'd happily go back to ignoring them.

Also, I must point out that you don't kick ghouls, you behead them. Just, you know, FYI.

And, in case you hadn't already heard, the northeast kinda has a lock on being awesome right about now. Come on New Hampshire! Get your governnor to do the right thing!

So, Deadpool has been described in the comics as being like Ryan Reynolds and then would be played by Ryan Reynolds. This level of fourth-wall lacking metaness is perfect for the character.

Isn't it just? I think that more than anything would be the most awesome part. They might have to tone down the fourth-wall-breakage in the movie itself if only because that sort of thing is very grating in film (I'm thinking of things like the constant stop-and-make-sure-the-audience-gets-the-joke/irony that made Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back so tedious).

I'd be happier if it felt like the Mormons were on the downswing instead of the upswing they seem to actually be on. I mean, they're still so new - all the other religions have had centuries to prance around, so I worry about how long these guys might have before there's any proper effective backlash. :(

Yeah, I wish I had any confidence that their power was waning. I wish. There just aren't those signs, especially since their major power comes from the absolute certainty of generating money. I mean, Mormons do tithe, and tithe regularly. It's scary to think how their riches can affect change. (I mean, look at their interference in California. They already run Utah...)

Not as much as they'd like.

But the backlash starts when good people stop being silent and accepting about their creepy practices. They've ALREADY got this whole rhetoric of the oppressed-victim going on... might as well make it true...

Yeah, they basically invented Utah, and you're right about the tithing. And I knew a bunch of Mormons in college, and despite seeming like rational human beings I think they all took it really seriously.

Mostly, though, it's the organizational power of the church that scares me - they're compiling huge amounts of information and doing so many things in secret. And their beliefs are weird, though, to be fair - to me ALL the religions seem really weird. I'm not truly in a place to judge that part of it.

They are amassing two things which, to my mind, equal power: knowledge and money. They are doing so mostly in secret but with a benign face put to any who inquire from without. The secrecy on top of all that makes me very nervous, especially when it's coupled with an evangelist sort of religious belief wherein by hook or by crook, they will have you. (Even if it's only after you're dead.)

And because any refutation of the Mormon Church seems like anti-religious bias, and because freedom of religion is a sacred right in the USA, there's not a whole lot you can do about stopping them so long as there's nothing illegal done. And why would they do anything illegal when they have power enough to get it done "democratically"?

AHAHAHAHA. It's not a meme yo - they really do believe in and have "magic" underwear - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temple_garment (unless of course you already knew that and were being sarcastic....)

Nope, that is news to me. Wow Mormons are stupider and weirder than I thought.

Lol. Yes, yes they are. I remember seeing a story once about this hockey player who was Mormon and made sure to wear his magic underwear for every game....

Oh Mormons! They just get more and more FANTASTIC.

Deaaaadpooool~~~ I am too excited. He was my favorite. I want to read some comics of his, but delving into Marvel Superhero storylines scares the fucking shit out of me. There's just so much! Where the hell am I supposed to start? Gah.

Start with Wikipedia, where else? :)

Honestly, it's not a bad way to get info on the character and determine where you want to go from there. After that, browse your local comic shop?
