The folks who posited "JAFO" as an answer to my "Quel de Fuck, NG?" post from yesterday are probably closer to the money.

He just asked me if I knew anything about pipettes.

::headdesk::

Specifically? He didn't know how to read the numbers on the micropipettor so that he could pipette the amount he wanted

Maybe I should show him this:

Now, maybe that is all impenetrable nonsense to non-science folks. However, if you watch at 1:25 or so, you'll see exactly how to read a micropipette in order to select exact quantity of solution you wish to aspirate. You twist the numbers until they read, top to bottom, the number. NG was sure that it read bottom to top.

He had two weeks of training with his predecessor before he started. WTF?

Two weeks of training in *what*? Maybe you should see if he can fetch. :)

Did I forget to mention that NG video recorded his predecessor doing his job? There's archival footage, notes--everything except basic lab (or common) sense here.

Wait a sec. Are we talking about the standard chemistry lab equipment that most of us were exposed to in college and most likely high school as well? This guy is trying to work in science and he doesn't know how to do this? And also has apparently never used Microsoft Office? What, pray tell, is he able to do?

Work with mice? The job is basically a mice wrangler. But that's more than just mating/pairing mice and setting them up for experiments. He has to do PCRs and such to keep the stocks labeled, etc. When L trained NG to do this job, I noticed how he really didn't seem to know anything about PCR. I asked L at the time, "Why did they hire this guy?" I think the answer was "He knows stuff about mice and they were desperate to get someone in before I leave."

Yeah, I don't know what he can do, but he was in the right place to get hired at the time?

What stuff does he know about mice? That they like cheese?

Man, he sounds like a moron.

He's had mouse facility training, apparently. But? So have I. Three-four years ago. I bet that is the sort of thing you can catch up on a lot quicker than the things he's really short of.

The British girl from the other lab is having a hard time not rolling her eyes at him, I can tell.

Perhaps he was the first successful mouse to human brain transplant, and thus knows mice on a level we cannot. It would certainly explain all of the questions...

[livejournal.com profile] trinityvixen: be careful, and don't put alfalfa pellets in your lunch... His little beady mouse eyes are keen, even if he cannot process what he sees properly. He'll take your food and then ask you if you know anything about tying shoes. Beware!

I try not to make any sudden movements, either, lest he freak out and toss bedding all over the place!

Not necessarily. He may be completely incompetent and rather dim, but that could mean he finds intelligent capable women highly attractive. ;)

Saw pictures of his wife--she's cute, British, and a teacher! God knows how he pulled that off :P

It annoys me that with all sorts of qualified people out there looking for jobs, they keep hiring from the bottom of the barrel.

Oh, man, I hadn't really thought of that. Yuck.

I agree. I've also found many places that don't want the input of intelligent people, though, they'd rather run an inefficient outfit they already understand. People are crazy.

That was me, also how can you get a Biomedical Sciences degree and not know how to use a Micropipette, have you got some kind of wacky Zoologist in a lab?
