I'm not... look, it's not like I'm sorry about doing it. Or embarrassed. I lost the ability to be embarrassed by my geekery when a kid I knew in high school--who I hadn't interacted with for four years--introduced me to his girlfriend as "that girl with The Matrix stickers all over her binders."

But I must have been really tired when I made my second Shepard character. I don't even remember naming him. It's a blip on the timeline of his creation compared to the agonizing process of trying (and failing) to make him not ass-faced. (Note to future self reading back on her LJ tags as Mass Effect 3 comes out: JUST LEAVE THE DEFAULT.)

I was looking at his name today. I named him Morbo. It's not that that's extraordinary--people often name player characters after other characters. [livejournal.com profile] moonlightalice was just regaling me with the tale of her Star Trek Online character, Leah Brahms. So this sort of thing happens.

But...Morbo? Was this because I finally watched the last Futurama movie recently? Why Morbo? Why don't I even remember naming him that? I almost did a spit-take when I saw his name.

If I were to ask "What is wrong with me?" would I like the answers I'd give myself?

Whenever I have to name a character something non-generic, I usually plagiarize. Though my STO character is more an homage than a plagiarization--Dave Hudson, descendant of Henry, piloting the U.S.S. Half Moon. OK, so the concept is stolen from Uncharted, but everything's taken at this point.

But now, I think I'll name my female Shepard Leela :)

The first Shepard I made was Meridian Shepard, Meridian being an old internet handle I had several places. After that I got "Dylan" randomly for male Shepard. From that, we joked about the "y" feminizing him, and eventually I ended up with a female Shepard by the name of Satyn. ::rolls eyes at self::

Because I played through with Satyn, this is the first naming I've done in a while. Leela, however, is an excellent name, not only for Futurama but also for Doctor Who, from whence her name comes.

I use default names wherever possible. When there is no default or easily-accessable canon name, the hero will usually get named Hero. Makes him easy to keep track of.

For a while, I kept track of which save files I'd used a Game Genie on by naming the main characters "Ghame", "Jean" or variants thereof.

I actually like randomizing when it offers. Usually, I just go with whatever comes to me at the time, which is how Tidus in Final Fantasy X ended up as Crush. (I was watching Finding Nemo right before and this surfer-dude character was perfect for the name of the surfer-dude turtle.) I guess that's where Morbo must have come from.

I once randomized a name and it spelled it wrong. I know it spelled it wrong because it wasn't a name--which can have many spellings--but an actual word, and one that I sometimes used as a name anyway. I thought it was a sign I should use that for a name, but I made sure to re-spell it.

Pretty much every game character I've ever named is a reference to *something.* On purpose. And of course it's something nerdy.

I love Morbo, I really do. Especially when he mutters "I will destroy you" to his wife as she fixes his tie.

Best. I love it. Actually, that whole episode kills me, especially with Bender and his gigantic cigar.

That's the 300 cups of coffee episode. I can quote Fry's whole freakout at Bender by heart now. There were episodes in that latter half of season four which just rule the world.

Morbo definitely rocks! I've always loved him. The clips that people have posted are excellent, but there are so many!

Definitely too hard to choose a favorite. I have one, but it keeps rotating. Especially after that "WINDMILLS DON'T WORK THAT WAY" post above.

Except in this case where I'm missing it. I blame Mondays.
