Sorry to keep spamming you folks. I confess I'm bored at work. Tomorrow, I have a short day before I have to go upstate for the afternoon/evening, and it's just impossible to focus today as a result. I'm headed upstate because my parents are both unable to be there when their cable guy is coming to fix their line. During the recent snowstorm, something got fudged up and now they need to actually have physical work done to fix the line. I've also had my new laptop hard drive mailed to them so I can fiddle with that while the guy works.

I need only be there in the afternoon, so I'm debating going out to a movie in the evening. Looking at what's out now, I would probably see Shutter Island or The Crazies. I want to see Alice, despite the less-than-favorable reviews, but I'll hold off and take that one in as a matinee. I'm pretty sure that I'm the only one who wants to see either of the other two, so I'll go myself to those.

Has anyone seen either of the first two? Would you recommend one or the other? Taste is not an issue (obviously, since this is me we're talking about), nor is interest. I'm interested equally in either.

Go home, spend the $15 instead on Toy Soldiers. Fantastic new tower defense game, and much credit to the game designer who realized that tower defense was the perfect way to make a WWI game. And you can take control of the turrets for some shooter gameplay--get out your misanthropic urges by gassing oncoming Germans. There's even airplane combat!

Why would I buy a video game when I'll be upstate with no system?

D'oh, forgot to read thoroughly. Well, buy Toy Soldiers anyways when you get back.

What's a tower defense game?

Tower defense = strategy-like game where you place and upgrade defensive structures to fight off waves of enemies, earning more money, which is used to buy more defensive structures. The genre took off on free web games, and has been improving since. Examples include Plants vs. Zombies, Gemcraft, and the South Park Let's Go Tower Defense Game!!.

This is of course a perfect genre for WWI, where idiot European generals (possibly related to Zapp Brannigan) thought the key to advancing was to send wave after wave of infantry into entrenched machine guns. Toy Soldiers improves on the genre by letting you step into towers and control them manually, and also letting you drive vehicles around the battlefield. There's also multiplayer, where you can send your own waves at the enemy's structures.

Sounds like the ending battles of Brutal Legend. That looked...boring. But I'm glad that you're so enthused. Have fun.

As far as TD games go, there's Desktop Tower Defense (there's a DS version, too)... simple, to the point, challenging and a lot of fun. Plants Vs. Zombies is the shit, too! That ruled my world for a month after PAx last year.

I actually do want to see both of those, but don't hold back on my account. I can just as easily wait for DVD. I have heard The Crazies is not so good though.

You know, I was going to wait on seeing the original Crazies first. But I wouldn't want to watch either too close to the other.

Shutter Island seems to be one that is getting decent reviews, but not especially great that I even have to see it. I should maybe just stay home and watch some more Spartacus...

Crazies is sort of your zombie-but-not time film with the government as the bad guy. It's got some truly enjoyable moments in there as well as some cringe worthy ones. Best check you scientific side at the door though since certain things REALLY require a lot of suspension of disbelief.

Oh, zombie movies are the worst about this sort of thing. The more they try to make it scientifically sound, the worse it gets. But if it's worse than average, that could take me right out of the movie...

Shutter Island is supposed to be very good. I mean to go see it when I've got some time to spare. Isn't The Crazies just a remake of something earlier and better, anyway?

The Crazies is a remake, yes. I've heard mixed-to-poor things. Shutter Island had mostly good-to-mixed things, but I'm honestly less interested in seeing it now-now-now. I have no idea whether I'll actually go out to see the movie or not if the weather stays so crappy, so it may all just be Netflix-bound.

I'm curious about Shutter Island, actually, I've heard good things. I'll probably catch it on DVD.

I'd be happy to do a matinee with you some time if you think you'll want to see it in the theater.

I'd do it as a matinee.
