Once upon a time, someone brilliant who I think was [livejournal.com profile] glvalentine because she's this sort of brilliant posited the theory that Hugo Weaving is on a mission to be in every franchise. At the time this theory was born, he had, to date, been in The Matrix, Lord of the Rings, Transformers, and god alone knows how many other sci-fi/fantasy films. I think the joke was that he was going to end up being Captain America at this rate.

Well, not quite. But it was a near thing. And he'll still be in the movie!

(Also, HEEE at the comment "he's half forehead.")

Also, everyone and their father has been up for the Cap's role. Including that guy from the American version of The Office. The only ones I've heard were still in serious consideration were Chris Evans and some unknown.

Huh, Chris Evans doesn't seem like a bad fit...

I'm actually a fan of Chris Evans' serious (or more so) work. I thought he was surprisingly wonderful in Sunshine. But I don't know that I like him for the Cap. I think you need a blonde version of Superman for Captain America--he has to be almost without a sense of irony about himself to work. Chris Evans is just too funny to play it that straight. He could surprise me, sure, but I don't know that I could suspend that instinct to expect funny from him. I have the same trouble with Ryan Reynolds, but that's fine because he's playing Deadpool and Green Lantern, neither of whom are exactly Boy Scouts.

Captain America is a tough one to cast, which is obviously why they haven't been able to do it yet. Wait, have they? ::runs to check teh interwebs:: No, not yet. You have to find someone who can be both a twerp and physically imposing, who is quintessentially human and yet impossibly, pre-ironically noble in all that he does. That's what I mean about him being Marvel's Superman, only Captain America also is saddled with the burden of not just being a hero but the conscience of the nation. I don't know if you've read recent Marvel storylines, but Captain America--the public's hero--took a strong stance against a law requiring superhumans to register. His identity has never been a secret, far as I know, and even if it is to the public, it's always been known to the government because they created him. Captain America has to be that forthright that he will say no to the elected government if he believes it is wrong by the principles of the country...and he has to not come off like a fundamentalist teabagger freak. Veeeery tricky.

If he weren't already tapped for Thor, I'd have said Chris Hemsworth (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1165110/) might have been a good choice. He's got a sort of pretty but bland solidity to him. I've only seen him in five minutes of the Star Trek reboot, so I have no idea how good of an actor he is, really. But we'll see with Thor, I guess.

I haven't read any of the comics, but I am aware of Captain America's general character and you make good points. Did you see Push by the way? And, if so, your thoughts? Anyway, a couple friends and I discussed the Captain America casting dilemma after work this evening as well. My friend doesn't like Chris Evans as a prospect because he thinks he's not physically imposing enough. I don't know. I mean, sure, he's a beast in a lot of the comics and animated features, but that's a little over the top.

Ah, so THAT'S who's playing Thor! I heard they chose someone, but I didn't know the name and still wouldn't if you hadn't provided me with that handy little link. Yeah, I saw Star Trek twice and never knew his name. Huh...I have to agree that he could have fit as the Cap as well. When I first heard they were making a live action Thor film, my first reaction was "they should get Triple H from WWE to play Thor!" 'cause he absolutely looks the part... it's just too bad he can't act. : )

I liked Push a lot. It had a lot of character to it. And if your friend thinks the Captain has to be Arnold-sized, well, tell him to stop looking at pictures drawn by Rob Liefeld. (This is not a man, it's a tank with a head. (http://jordynmarcellus.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/liefeld-cap.jpg))

Triple H was in Blade Trinity. He did all right for what was admittedly a stupid movie. (I liked it anyway. Parker Posey and Ryan Reynolds should always do movies together.) Anyway, Thor is being directed by Kenneth Branaugh of all people. It will be amazing--amazingly good or amazingly weird is yet to be seen.

Haha that photo is obnoxious. My friend has more sense than that -- I think he's just thinking how, in so many comics/photos or whatnot, the heroes get the he-man treatment.

Haha I forgot Triple H and Ryan Reynolds were in Blade Trinity and I had no idea Kenneth Branaugh was directing Thor! Wow. Thor just got a lot more interesting. : )
