trinityvixen: (blogging from work)

I think I'm getting sick again. This is ridiculous. I've been sick easily twice as much in the last half year as I was for the two years previous. This morning, biking to work nearly killed me. I got to work all jelly-legged and had to have a sit in the kitchen to collect myself. I thought I might throw up, which led me to panic about whether or not my electrolytes were off enough to give me water poisoning. I also woke up with a headache that exists at the periphery of my consciousness only to throb, despite judicious use of painkillers, whenever I shift too quickly. I'm out of it, but not yet so sick that I can justify skivving off of work. What I really want to do is fall into bed and cuddle up with blankets until I stop being so tired. Which I shouldn't be because I got an adequate amount of sleep last night.

Maybe it's just a temporary funk and the usual symptom of impending sickness--the fact that the back of my nasal passage feels a little raw--is only due to allergies. I should be so lucky. Still, this sucks. I cannot figure out why I should be coming down with things so often. A few weeks ago, I had good reason to be ill as I was around sick people. No one is sick here any more. What is going on, immune system? Too much Diet Pepsi? Not enough? TELL ME.

In other news, the women at my work are fun, but they're not geeks. Sometimes we talk about movies, and I'm right at home in the conversation. Otherwise, they're all totally into fashion and talk about using the internet to help them plan outfits. As someone whose outfit "planning" consists of picking out the least dirty geeky t-shirt to pair with the same jeans I've been wearing for a week, this interest of theirs is a little baffling. I like Project Runway and I appreciate fashion as an art form much more than I do as something relevant to my life. Perhaps I could learn something from these discussions, but I doubt it. I'm more likely to feeling amazing in my N7 hoodie than in something tangentially inspired by Versace.

Three things make a post: Overstock.com has superb customer service. I called about some face cream I ordered from them arriving with the cap cracked. The product isn't leaking out, but once I remove the seal on the cream, or try to take on/off the top at all, it will quickly cease to keep the cream from drying out. They don't accept returns, so they're sending me another bottle, free of charge, to replace the cracked one, and I don't have to send back the old one. That means that if it doesn't dry out entirely (alas, not a likely situation, though it is a possibility), I'll be getting two for the price of one, no questions asked. I feel like it's worth mentioning when I get good customer service. It seems I'll never run out bad CS stories, but it's worth it to make a note of the good ones.

To be fair, it was hot and humid this morning. It makes exercise a lot harder. I wanted to throw up for the last five minutes of my run this morning. Dying really seemed like a viable option for a moment there. And even after walking "cool" and sitting for fifteen minutes and taking an icy shower, I was still sweating. So maybe you're just a little under the weather, but exercise in the humidity is just making you feel worse than you otherwise would.

But it wasn't hotter or more humid than other mornings previous, was it? No, I won't argue with you. I need it to be true that I'm not getting sick again.

The last couple days have been kind of awful with humidity at 70% (10% higher than last week). You may not be 100%, but exercising outside now is like exercising in a swamp, and you're going to be losing salt worse than pretty much any other time this summer (so far). Just stay hydrated, and drink more than just water.

That's a good idea. I've been drinking a ton of water lately because I can feel myself dehydrating. Not to be gross, but when you can feel your saliva getting thick, you know you need more water...

I've been alternating between water and OJ. Water is great for many reasons, but does nothing for your energy levels.

I wish I liked fruit juice, but I just don't. I suppose I should go back to cutting my water with a tiny bit of Powerade. That does make a difference. (I can't drink Powerade straight unless severely dehydrated.)

Isn't there an M2M up there? You could get Pocari Sweat (I think) :P

Tastes better than powerade, but looks and sounds disgusting!

I'm up at the hospital, not at the Morningside campus, alas. I'm also not a fan of the Sweat. I'll stick to the sugar beverages.

This is a better decision. OJ is too sugary, whereas I've heard that pro athletes drink watered-down Powerade/Gatorade.

Hm, the last time I felt like throwing up for the last five minutes of a run, I was doing sprints on 7/4 outside in the afternoon sun.
Fortunately this was in the park right across from my apartment, because I realized as I was cooling off in a cold shower right afterward and my head cleared up a bit that yeah, that was probably the beginnings of a heat stroke right there . . .

My stomach gets easily confused. Heavy exercise, stop and go traffic, and the concept of morning all make it upset. I'm afraid I've learned that mild nausea is not actually a very good indicator of anything for me.

Yikes. I hope it's nothing serious and goes away soon. : /

I don't think I've ever met anyone that into fashion, and that's including a couple people I've known who wanted to be fashion designers.

That's awesome. Netflix has always had good customer service in the cases that I had to contact them.

Well, I'm still not really sick. Here's hoping I don't completely fall ill.

Netflix does have good customer service. Makes their sudden rate-risings a pain to reconcile with their otherwise outstanding service.

The rate changes are a bummer of course, but I personally feel it's still a great deal.

It is still a really good deal, but it's also definitely a total bummer. I need to work out whether I want to keep the streaming. So long as I can borrow streaming privileges from my roommates, I might not need it, but I would hate to lose that flexibility. The question is only if it's worth it.

I should be looking at whether it's really worth it for me to keep the streaming, too. I do use it, but it tends to be in binges. Like I'll watch four episodes of some show one night and then nothing for a couple of months. But I like to have it in case.

Your symptoms actually sound a lot more like heat exhaustion to me. I would definitely not recommend biking when it's 90+ degrees and the humidity is over 60%.

I'd agree with you except that I was feeling lousy after waking up in an air-conditioned room, well before I biked. I probably shouldn't have pushed it. I'll definitely be more careful in the future.

Maybe the stress of the last month has lowered your immune system? :(

Blech. Hope you're not coming down with anything again and it's just the weather, as people have suggested. I assume you wash your hands fairly often--once I started doing that, nigh obsessively, and made sure I got regular exercise, I cut back on my sick days considerably.

I work in a lab where my hands are exposed to all sorts of gunk. I probably wash my hands more than ten times a day, not including after trips to the bathroom or before meals. I think it worked, too, as I only ever got sick maybe once a year prior to this.

The heat makes me sick even if I've been in an AC'ed house all day. I spend three months feeling just low-level unwell. It's also taken me until basically now to get over that cold from a few weekends ago. D:

This is the most tangential question ever, but what kind of face cream was it? I'm investigating moisturizers.

That cold was AWFUL. I shouldn't wonder if you weren't still fighting off a month from now. I think I'm not sick. Whatever it was making me feel like shit, I've kicked it, though it took two days to really return to something like normal. Here's hoping you do the same.

The face cream is Origin's Youthtopia (http://www.overstock.com/Health-Beauty/Origins-Youthtopia-1.7-ounce-Skin-Firming-Cream/4365897/product.html?cid=123620), which is technically a skin firming cream. Whatever the claims of my fashion-and-beauty-obsessed coworkers, I remain EXTREMELY skeptical of its "firming" powers. However, I feel like I haven't broken out hardly at all while I've been using it regularly. I hated the smell at first but now I've gotten used to it and even like it. It's very light when I apply it and despite the incredible expense, it does last a long time. I got a 1 oz free sample and despite using it regularly twice a day, it lasted me six months. So I figure the 1.7 oz size will probably last me a year or so, and that's worth it for $40. Plus, buying on Overstock.com, I have "O Rewards" that I can apply to the cost to lower it, too.

That cold was weird. I didn't lack for energy, but I've never, ever been that unable to sleep due to sheer inability to lie down without my entire face protesting. Do not want ever again. D:

I've heard good things about their Perfect World moisturizer, too. I always wear a daytime moisturizer with sunscreen, though, because incidental sun exposure apparently accounts for something like 80% of visible sun damage. I'm planning to look 20-something until I'm 80.
