But this story is already just as funny as the Sailor Moon/Hellblazer crossover. It's a Harry Potter/Hellblazer crossover. I've only gotten into the first chapter thus far (my boss is back), but it's hilarious.

My favorite line: "Teach me to take a brick to a magic fight."

Check it out (and [livejournal.com profile] ivy03 I've got a Constantine fic for you just over here). Fics courtesy of GAFF's 'antidote' thread, God bless it.

Never fear! Keep reading!

The summary merely mentioned that the character seems like a Mary Sue. She is, in fact, someone from the Hellblazer-verse translated over into the movieverse. You would like the representation of John more, that's why I recommended it. Do give it another try.

Also, the 'hir' is not misspelled. I thought so, too, at first. It's the gender neutral possessive that John uses to describe Gabriel. He also refers to Gabriel as 's/he' throughout. But the voice is distinctly John, I promise. Snarky-at-his-best-with-a-side-of-tragedy-movie-Constantine, I promise.

Well then the author's not much of a feminist. Wouldn't the term be "hyr"? Why am I arguing about this?

To pass the time and avoid reading? Dunno, really. Gender-neutral isn't my bag, baby.

"hir" and "sie" are, for some reason, accepted gender-neutral pronouns.

I don't see any compelling reason to use "hyr" instead, but then I scoff, loudly, at the use of "womyn". Please. If one is secure enough in one's identity, then why make a show of distancing onesself from other possibly identities?

I sort of scoff at "hir" and "sie", too, because it sounds fucking pretentious. Just pick a damn pronoun already or use your name. I can't see John Constantine ever saying/thinking "hir" - he's going to either assign a gender at will or call Gabriel "Gabriel" or some other noun that makes it obvious who he's referring to. John's not PC, he's not going to give a shit about whether or not he offends an angel by assigning him/her/it a gender.

(Also, I can't remember offhand, but doesn't the novelization identify Gabriel as male?)

Yay, ranty rant rant!

You're right. That was quite good. I'd even call it effective use of an anagram. It had many hallmarks of a mary sue but truly wasn't one. And the author got the character of Constantine - even his maudlin side. I guess I should've known it wasn't a Mary Sue when I noticed it was in first person, John's POV - Mary Sues never do that.

...unless they make a Mary Sue out of a canon character for some reason. But not usually in first person, no.

Hurrah! She likeded it!
